I think there are several of us on this and other forums who either used to or still do show dogs. My wife and I started in Europe and then imported some Shelties (go figure given my name here) and began showing in the 80s after I retired from the Army. We bred, raised and showed shelties for almost 15 years until we retired from that because the community into which we were moving allowed only 2 animals of any kind (we had as many as 20 at one time although that was an extreme). We used to go to all the shows in the SW region, several of them four day shows. We miss that part of our life and are down to our last Sheltie (plus a Golden). When the Sheltie goes, she will not be replaced as we are getting old and one dog will be enough. I enjoyed the pictures. I could almost imagine smelling the chalk (and other odors ) again!

My wive's passion. She has a great time and makes a little money too. I enjoy it as a bystander, Sheltie.
And spoil the dogs every chance i get. They give me peace of mind.
Sounds like you guys had a long run w/it. i imagine you do miss it. Dang dog people love to have a good time.
I always tease her when two of her toughest competitors defeat her. Talk about getting a rise.
Winding down to 1-2 dogs makes sense. They can demand a lot of resources.

Ihave enjoyed a few dog shows here in Cali, they look just like yours (mostly [sorry Ed]).
The worst event I ever attended was a cat show. OMG.
If you are ever invited to a cat show, run for the hills, fast, like Forrest Gump.................

Never been to either (cat or dog), but I have seen Westminster on TV a few times. Cats? Don't think you could pay me to go to or watch a cat show...
ACK!!

Please and (if you do) thank you. I have a little 5 pound soaking wet cat that my Rhodesians are scared to death of. They will chase till it turns around. Then they pile up stopping like a freeway fog pile up. They are bay dogs, obviously not catch dogs. LOL

I'm sure it would mean more to me if I had a dog in the fight - er, I mean competition. How'd your dog doo?

I want you to visit a dog show. They are free unless you have to pay typical $5 parking. Just to go inside and walk around for a couple of hours is worth it.
But i just wanted you to go in as a visitor and see the madness. The people are funny in there too.
A friend pro handler of my wife showed the dog and won a 4 point major. It was a big win for her. But the dog lives with a gal in Atlanta. She bought the dog from my wife w/the understanding it could be shown under our kennel name. I think we have breeding rights to. Standard arrangements of co-ownership practiced on show dogs.
I only go to 2 shows a year to appease. One day each show. They always make me be the bucket b!itch.

Ha, bucket b!itch, lol! Five bucks for parking is cheap! The most likely place in SD for a dog show would be the fairgrounds. Parking last time I was up there was $9!!
James, do the dog owners or handlers get cut-throat? I mean, like parents of little league or pop warner kids? Or even soccer moms! I can see how they want their "kids" to win, lol. But I also understand how winning is beneficial to the producing kennel.

#12 gets my vote.
drum roll please... Did they give you that gift bag to put your balls in while you were there. Ducking. Kidding. It was right there. Too easy.
Get em back at the door when you leave?
Ill be honest, if I see one of them dog shows on TV while flipping channels Ill watch. I like all sizes of dogs. The little ones are sassy and the bigger dogs are just plain cool. My neighbor has wild cats that live outside all the time. My dog chases them when they pass through the yard to go out into the woods. If you follow the track it goes out into the woods a good 1/8 mile you can see their trail they take every day.
St Louis has a big dog show like that. Purina something. Big headquarters building. I don't know if they still do but the dog food use to be made in East St Louis. I remember seeing it when I was younger going to my grandmas house.

Who ya are and how many people you know etc. competition is fierce and sometimes at the expense of the breed. Mostly judging is done in favor of the breed though. Professional handlers definitely win w/lessor dogs. Owner/breeders are often amateur ish at handling. Good judges should and usually do see thru it. An owner/breeder winning big is a big deal. And carries a high merit. Showing your own home bred stuff is cool. We have always had great dogs and that is a big help.

It is a dynamic bunch of going ons. Humorous to see all the crazy breeds. And dog peoples(as i call us) are funny too. I think they are more into dogs than humans-smart.

jamesp, did you ever show off ol girl? The female you have with grey face now. She finished a champion real young. Her grandmother was winner at the national and got award of merit. About as high as it gets. And she was a female. Males usually win that big stuff. That ole dog was a rocket ship. Visitors would bring their dogs down and she would smoke em after she was 10 years old. This is grandma at about 9 years old going 362 MPH.
