Hi there,
I'm Jan, nice to make your acquaintance:-)
I have been collecting Scottish agates in the Montrose area since I was a child, about 20 years. Of course I'm interested in all types of agate, from any location, that goes without saying. I have a very large collection of agates from the aforementioned area, some cut, although most not so. And I love unusual agates in particular, black agate (from my experience, unusual in Scotland, although please, enlighten me) and carnelian plus amethyst and geodes. I have only recently started using lapidary equipment, and so I would appreciate any advice from any more experienced lapidaries on how best to cut and shape stones. Also, it would be especially great to hear from any fellow Scottish agate hunters as well as anyone, from anywhere, with the same passion as me!
Thanks for reading!
Cheers,
Jan

Hi Jan,
A warm welcome from Fife! I started collecting Scottish agates at the end of last year and am totally hooked! I only started tumbling beach pebbles from a family holiday near Auchmithie in August last year and have moved on to finding and tumbling agates. Have a look at the threads I have posted regarding some of my beach finds (just pebbles) and my trips to find agates. I have a load and must update that thread now.
I'd love to see some pictures of your finds.
Kind regards Ian

Hi Jan,
Those are lovely agates! I have not looked in fields - there or anywhere yet. I have a contact in the Forfar area who farms and may ask him permission to look in his fields.
What type of equipment do you use for cutting?
Kind regards Ian

I use an American Hi-Tech Diamond machine. A 10" Slab Saw. And it has always cut at a slight angle, which is either due to my incompetence or a fault in the machine.I bought a new German diamond blade which broke almost immediately in the machine, and I imagine it wasn't designed for the speed at which the machine runs. Not great. So I have no saw at present. Although this hasn't stopped me collecting! Where are the locations in Forfar?

ulalume welcome. You should post pictures and info on your afflicted slab saw in the slabs and saws section, there's a few who may be able to help with fixing the problem.
