No. A cannible eats members of the same species. This is two different species of snail. The same as a coyote eating your pet dog. So a Great White Shark eating a Nurse Shark isn't cannibalism? Learn something new every day...

Just to put this one too bed. I googled seeking economic damage attributed to this snail, in a region in which it is established outside it's native range, for decades, and which is a major area for growing many crops; Hawaii. hawaii achatina economic damage was my search, I was hoping that USDA or HDA would have released numbers as to the injury this snail causes to the "xyz" crop growers in Hawaii. No such document exists. Nor does a similar document exist for any other region they are "invasive" in. Just because a species is a weed and will quickly fill a niche in a new land, does not mean they are necessarily a pest in that same habitat. Government fearmongering at it's best. Just like the war on drugs or global warming. Just another fabricated crisis for bureaucrats to exploit. That is all.

Try a Google search for Giant African Snail damage rather than using the generic name Scott. You'll probably get more info from the USDA, Hawaiian AG dept and others.....Mel

using this new methodology I did find a promising link www.hear.org/books/tgas1961/pdfs/tgas1961chapter04 had the promising title "economic status" so I opened it and read it. As you might expect it gives myriad anecdotes aboiut the extensive species list of food plants. It addresses the snail as a nuisance. It goes into potential health issues as large amounts of snails feces may foul a drinking water source.... It turns out the snail after months of age becomes a scavenger and and I am trying I promise. I WANT to be a believer. Even in a paper published by a government agency (University of Chicago) I still can find no real evidence that this species is ACTUALLY a dangerous invasive! In fact the adults are scavengers and may well benefit the ag business. No, still I cannot find evidence the species is a bonafide threat. Even in areas where it is well established for a long time. Guam & Hawaii are two American territories from which excellent data proving the huge economic impact of the snails [1]should be available[/i]. It is not forthcoming. I am done googling but if anyone has links to published proof of the destructive powers of this species, please show them. I can't prove a negative, but all evidence so far points to a false crisis.

Nope! Tiger shark babies eating siblings in the womb is tho'! Those are sand tiger sharks, not tiger sharks. The gestational period for sharks averages 2 years. In sand tigers the females form about 50,000 eggs. These are released in packets of eggs holding around 15 eggs in each packet to the wombs. The fastest developing fetus will feed on the other eggs that are released throughout the gestational period. If two of the sand tiger sharks develop at the same rate in the same womb then the two fetuses will fight to the death. The female has two wombs and so will give live birth to two pups. Although sand tigers look ferocious they are not a real danger to humans. Tiger sharks on the other hand are a big threat to humans and account for most of the attacks on humans in Hawaii. Tiger sharks have large numbers of pups with usually 10-80 pups being born through live birth.

I just found this tidbit in the government report linked above.
This was exactly my point. While I cannot prove a negative, the clear lack of reports of the damages we have been sold on speak loudly. Specially when we learn of nothing but incidental damage in a hugely important economic crop like Tea and Coffee.

Holy smokes, they consume excrement. Washington DC needs to establish a quarantine! Few dozen of those snails and the place would be vacant *L*
Nah, that's not really fair to the snails. Heck, they'd take one look at Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, pull into their shells and never come out. They might eat some excrement but not "that" excrement. Even poop eating snails have to draw the line somewhere. *L*....Mel
