They've been using sapphire as lens covers for a while now. They also use sapphire for the finger print sensor on the home button. You shouldn't have to worry about scratching the screen with a sapphire display.
Did the article also mention that the plant for producing the sapphire is in Arizona? They're manufacturing the new Mac Pro in Texas too. It's nice to see Apple bringing some of the manufacturing back to the U.S.
