I find this rarely on my local beach. It's part of the package brought from BC on the glacier express. Similar to Mariposite from CA, but I understand it to be a little harder.

I like the color and pattern, local finds rock. Interesting read about Listwanite on wikipedia. Cheers

having cut listwanite and mariposite I will concur that listwanite CAN be harder. The amount of quartz (like yours) determins the overall hardness. Mariposite usually has little quartz.
Nice piece you found!

Thanks Shotgunner. This isn't even close to the best of Listwanite I've seen around these parts. I'll try to get a killer specimen posted soon. In the meantime, I'm carving a set of address numbers out of the block from the above photo..

Very cool! I am convinced we have a big ass listwanite deposit in South Central Alaska. The local geology crowd has never heard of listwanite so it's just called aurora borealis. But I swear it is identical to yours. Maybe I'll send some off for analysis.
Sorry to derail, you found a beautiful rock, hope you find more!

That stuff is very pretty and like Scott says, it sure looks like Mariposite, though Mariposite is pretty soft stuff....Mel

Beautiful! I agree with the others, my first guess was Mariposite so I have learned something here.
