jollyrockhound: Me and my cousin were in a Florida spring 40 years ago. We were 17. Floating down Juniper Springs Run. We noticed a white ring down below and Ed said we had to swim down to it to get fossils. He knew it was a spring vent that had popped up pushing solids out. So down we went 15 feet and came up w/handfuls of clams and shark's teeth. Kept diving down and each of us came up w/a log about 7" dia. and 2 feet long. His diving buddy saw it a couple of years ago and said NOT petrified wood but mammoth tusk. He said wood is about nonexistent in the area. He could tell by the ends that it was 'bone'. It was poor carbonate material but still well preserved. We flipped out.
