It has been quite a while since i have posted but i recently took some pics of my last couple carvings and thought i would share them here. First is a soapstone bear. I collected this material about an hour away from my house and it is the first bear i have ever carved. I am working on one that is much larger and will be sure to post it when it is done. And next is a jade knife made from jade from northern B.C. This piece is about 4 inches tall so it could be worn as a large pendant or as just an ornament around the house. Sampson.

Thanks guys.
Shotgunner, I use diamond bits in my dremel and lots and lots of hand sanding for the jade pieces. I am working on upgrading my tools slowly so that i can shape and polish this tough stone faster and easier. For the soapstone i use only hand tools, mostly a small hand saw and a half round rasp. Once close to the overall shape i want i switch to wet/dry snadpaper and sand it wet down to about 1000 grit.

Yep, that bear is outstanding and the color is very interesting. The knife too. Any specific problems you encountered with this type of jade?

Helloooo Sampson. Been wondering what happened to you and it is good to see you back with some neat stuff. I like them both very much.
I am still making rings out of the black nephrite (like) stone that you sent to me and I think they are the toughest rings that I make. I believe it is a very good nephrite and quite marketable. Have you worked any of it? Jim

Do you carve in between knitting or knit in between carving? Anyway, you mastered both. I like very much the Maori design of the knife. Adrian

Thanks Kurt, I really liked the color that the bear turned out to be once i polished it up. very nice material and i have already gone back for more. It is quite a hike out carrying stone though so i only get a bit each trip. This jade worked up really well. I cut it myself from a larger block so i made sure to go with the grain and it polished fairly easily. It had one or two softer spots in it (the dark areas) but overall it is a really tightly felted and solid piece. It actually "sings" with a very nice tone if you tap the curly handle pieces.
Hey Jim, glad you are able to use that stone. It is extremely tough stuff but tends to polish fairly easily which makes it nice to work with. I have made a few small carvings out of it and they turned out pretty nice.
Thanks Adrian, I hardly have time to do all the things i like to. Between prospecting, stone carving, spinning and knitting yarn, turning wood on the lathe, and the various other things i like to do there just isn't enough hours in the day.

Both very nice, really like the bear, it says "bear" very loudly and not in a wimpy way either. Knife is very nice too and you got that nice of a finish by hand? Incredible!!
