Nice shots but that's an... odd... camera setup.
Seems like a good tripod and a couple of lights with daylight bulbs, maybe even a DIY light box would be somewhat easier.

Since the camera is connected to the taking surface vibration is almost nil. I like natural light too. If it is a clear sky and sun is high.

Whoa, that is some setup and the pictures are beyond words...I really love the detail and how you can see the intricate patterns and the quality of the wood petrification. You could sell a river rock to a blind person with that level of detail!

For shooting small subjects that rig works well. Thanks for the compliments. And thank you Larry for the great pet wood. Man that stuff takes a great polish.

Very interesting. At that level of magnification it looks textured and one would wonder how it even shines.
