Sometimes, the items we want to pickle are very small; sometimes they are flat. In either case, they are difficult to get off the bottom of the pickle pot. This is where the strainer comes in handy. Small items or flat items can be removed easily. The rocks are in there to make it even easier. The strainer is sold in grocery stores near the tuna fish cans, and in the pet food section. It was about $4-$5. All plastic. Here's the strainer in the little pickle pot. The pot was $10 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Brand is Tru. The strainer is yellow because I had left it in the pot turned on tooooo long and the water evaporated causing the strainer to deform. Adding water makes it good to go again. When you are doing 10 things at once, sometimes you forget that flat piece was even in there. With this, at least you will see it again.

Great idea! I will have to put a rock in mine to stand up flat pieces, that's what I have the most trouble with.
