Sometimes, the items we want to pickle are very small; sometimes they are flat. In either case, they are difficult to get off the bottom of the pickle pot.
This is where the strainer comes in handy. Small items or flat items can be removed easily. The rocks are in there to make it even easier.
The strainer is sold in grocery stores near the tuna fish cans, and in the pet food section. It was about $4-$5. All plastic.
Here's the strainer in the little pickle pot. The pot was $10 at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Brand is Tru.

Here's a close up of the plastic strainer with two solid rocks in it and one that has disintegrated over time. The strainer is yellow because I had left it in the pot turned on tooooo long and the water evaporated causing the strainer to deform. Adding water makes it good to go again.
