Anyone have experience with how cold rocks can be cut with mineral oil? I should have parts soon for my HP 18" saw. I just checked and the oil seems to be ok at 5F. I'm glad for the extra space since I moved the saw outside to a shed but miss cutting inside during winter.

The oil will warm up during cutting. As long as it isn't too thick you should be alright. If the shed is small and fairly tight the saw motor will help to heat it up a little. We are having a brutal Winter here. I had to put on a jacket to take the dogs out this morning.

Thanks John!! I wish the shed was tight. My wood shed (woods outside this year under tarps) is covered with osb and steel siding with one window broken out and 6" gaps where the roof meets the end for air flow to help dry the wood. Snow is blowing in right now. It's on my wish lis, but alas, near the bottom.

That's too funny. I had my neighbor keep an eye on freeze warnings during the almost two months we were in AZ and shut off my well pump to keep my sprinklers from freezing. He had an easy job this year. Not one hard freeze. My new fruit trees are budding and some are blooming. Hopefully it won't turn cold or too windy now they think Spring has Sprung.

I'm thinking that the way this winter is going here in MT that spring might be here by the beginning of June!

I cut all winter last year here in Michigan and have cut in temps near zero this year with mineral oil. I prop a 500 watt halogen work light right next to the saw tank for about an hour or two before I cut and that seems to help. I wanted to install a block heater pad this year but did not get around to it. these things kick out a good amount of heat. This is what I want to try (400 watt electric pad) www.summitracing.com/parts/mor-23996?seid=srese1&gclid=CMPZ7K3V5bwCFY1FMgodKwoA-gMy saw tank is cast aluminum but if it were steel I would get a magnetic heater for the tank like this. Have you not heard of global warming? No more cold. Funny when the snow started to melt at the Olympics the news was quick to bring up global warming. They turned right around to cover the big storm freezing out half the US without mentioning climate change.

Like I said on a couple FB posts - that cold air can not get down here without a lot of warm air going north. I just wish that warm air would stop here.
