Where I am at, there is a purple quartzite looking rock that they use on the RxR tracks as bedding for the ties. It does not polish and it is harder than woodpecker lips.
They also use it on the roads in approximately 1/8 inch grade gravel over new asphalt. It wrecks the plows in no time, but it must be really cheap.
I figured that I would try it as filler in my tumblers.
OH YEAH!
It works really good.
If this thread is still alive in the spring, and I am too, I will post a pic.

That's good info. I got several boxes of cores 2' x 1" 1/2 from my brother . He was drilling in MN for a job and brought back all the samples. Saves me the trouble of trying to slice them up and get a polish. Some are softer so the might have found bits of pipestone in the same area ? Who knows maybe we can use them for framing something out.

We got the same stuff around here. I once tried to tumble a batch of it but never got any to polish. It had so many little pits that it never really got smooth. I still have a sandwich baggie full of it. Your right .... makes good filler. That's about all its worth though.
