I just joined up but have been reading some of these threads for a while trying to figure my way through my new "hobby". I've always been fastenated by rocks, fossils and minerals, but only recently started tumbling rocks. I got a Thumler's AR-12 from therockshed and some "rough" Fancy Jasper to try out. It's a hobby of patience but I'm hooked. :0)
My "real" job prevents me from much rock collecting and to be honest my familiarity with the Mohs scale are going to have me shying away from collecting for a while, so one question I have is for those of you who buy your "rough rock" for tumbling, where do you buy it? I'm in South-East Michigan and (as far as I know) there aren't any shops around in my area.
I do want to say that therockshed has done nothing but good by me. I've ordered pre-polished spheres from them for years now, I'm just looking for options if you have any now that I'm trying my own hand at this stuff.

I'm sure if you asked, our members could fix you up with a good assortment of tumbling material. Maybe more than you need.

Welcome from Alpena!
Other than rocks I collect myself, I get most of my rough right here. Members often put stuff up for sale at reasonable prices.

Welcome to the forum. I am also in south east Michigan. You may want to look into a local rock club. I am a member of the Mount Clemens club www.mcgls.org/ and the club does sell rough rock at very reasonable prices. There's also a club in oakland county but I have never been to that one. A new rock shop just opened in December in Midland but I have been there a few times and they are selling mostly slabs and specimens so far with very little tumbling rough. Its still a great place to check out if your into rocks. here's the stores facebook site www.facebook.com/greatlakesundergroundThere's a rock show coming up at the end of the month in Taylor and me and my boys will have a couple tables full of stuff there. If you want to go to the show let me know and I can post a different flyer that will get you free admission Your off to a good start using the rock shed for rough and his stuff always makes for good tumbles. Chuck

Thank you for the replies. I really like this forum, seems like a lot of good people with a lot of first hand knowledge. I'll scour around for the threads about rough for sale. And Chuck, thank you so much for the info. Who knew that there were enough of us around to support several clubs in MI. :0)
