Does anyone have experience taking macro pics with a Nikon P100 camera ? I have one coming in the mail today, and can use all the tips I can get. I have a good tripod, light tent and photo lights.
The camera I bought is used, but has been gone through by Nikon USA, so should be in good workable condition.

You can find out a lot by seeing how close you can focus on the rock Don. You want to fill the photo plate with the rock-in focus. If it will not focus up close you may have poor luck. And check the 'menu' to see if it has a macro setting. I kept zooming back and forth till i could get a focus and it filled the screen with a 1.5 inch rock. (see pic). And then i cropped it using the computer basically magnifying it to the lower pic. after i cropped it using the computer (windows Live or iPhoto on Mac). This is about the same as 20X magnification.

These were my settings in FULL sun Don. Not the best settings for a macro. But the full sun let me get away with it. It is a starting point. Settings ISO 80(lowest ISO) shutter 1/250 f stop f5.4 pixel count 1406 X 1118 fl at 35mm Set camera to finest setting 20M, 26M, 30M or whatever you have. At 1/250 there was not even a need for a tripod. I am surprised. But you need full sun. Oh-most important, zoom in on the rock as much as possible and still be able to maintain focus. The camera should be 5-10 inches from the rock. So you are trying to fill the screen w/the rock. See the first(starting photo). First shot with new camera. A bit blurred, but it was hand held in poor lighting. I was surprised at how good it came out considering it was shot without flash or artificial lighting.

Tinker w/it Don. Bet it has capability. They are amazing cameras. About all of them in the last 5 years have great lenses and should get your macros.
Bet Jake has no fear.

Got a good heavy duty tripod Jan. Used to use it with a big old VCR camera.
I'm looking for a tripod that's set up so I can shoot straight down on a subject. I think vertical shots would be a big plus.
Hey James, Jake hasn't figured this new camera out yet. He hates my other 2 cameras, and tries to attack them when they're pointed at him.
I might add, I was trying to get a pic of a moving subject while sitting in my recliner. When Jake has 4 on the floor, he's always on the move.

Just wondering. Would a polarizing filter help to reduce reflections off of polished specimens ?

He won't let anyone sneak up on you either. My brother would bring his over and he would chew up the pit bull's toys in 30 minutes. Took the bull 2 weeks. Impressive dogs Jack Rusells.

This is my best addition to macro Don. And since the subject is attached to the camera vibration is almost not a problem. Digitals have auto focus mostly. The rack allows manual focus in case your camera has a crappy auto focus. For macro you want to control the focus because the focus range in macro(depth of field) is very shallow

He terriorizes anything that comes in his yard. He'll hop up in my recliner with me, and won't even let my wife get near me. But he's easy on his toys. He plays with them, but seldom tears one up.

My three 75 pound Ridgeback hounds got totally dominated by brother's jack. They finally lured him out on open ground and rolled him w/there open field tackle method. They took turns on him until he locked down on one of them like a vice grip. That's when the jack became victorious. My wife told my brother his jack cheated. Yea, 225 pounds vs 25 pounds. How could jack cheat w/those odds ?

That's quite an impressive camera set-up, James! ROFL @ your brother's dog!
Don, I wondered why Jake was giving you the eye when you took his picture. I have a Targus tripod that I purchased from WalMart that works okay for taking pics, but really like the one that gemfeller provided a link to for you.

Yup Jan, I ordered a copy stand last night. Small and lite enough to set up just about anywhere, but sturdy enough for steady shooting.
