have been trying to get a carving to polish, have sanded a couple of times and started with diamond grit, but each time could not get any polish. Today I looked at the surface of the carving under magnification, and there are numerous pores over the surface of the carving. is this a common occurrence in obsidian, I personally have never encountered this, and is there any cure?

That has "pores" where the needles intersect with the surface.
