What a mess, that burned off looks like a bunch of pungee sticks. Will it come back from the roots? Yes they will Larry. But it will take 15 years to reach that maturity. A weed-eater w/a blade is most effective but slow going. As you cut the canes they trap you. About have to cut every cane into 2-3 foot sticks. Keeps breaking the shaft. ha. And walking on a foot of piled slick poles will test your balance. That little 50' X 50' patch generated about 2 tractor trailer loads of debris. Burns fast !! Wear goggles mandatory. Full coverage motorcycle helmut is best.

It was forced on me by my customers. It is the treasured black bamboo and i knew it was vulnerable. It is planted all over Atlanta. Because everyone kept asking for it. over the years they started to listen to what i warned them. it falls, it's unsightly and it is a crappy plant. It just has jet black stalks. I am getting calls now, it froze, what to do? And they are getting an 'i told you so'. I made money but i warned them.
The root/rhizomes are still live and well.

Man, just saw this. . . harsh. Did the power pole rotate in the sand? The weight of the dying bamboo laying on the wires and pulled it down. Nothing to do with the ice storm. The bamboo is getting weak and laying over. It's heavy in numbers. It is a particularly thick walled variety and the canes are hard and heavy. This is about 10' X 10' worth of canes. They do burn furiously. But they tangle and are hard to handle. It is a work out Bill.

Read more: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/64839/dying-bamboo-takes-power-crushing?page=1&scrollTo=733202#ixzz2w53pHHIKThat's a wide track machine for working in wetlands. A wide track, not supposed to be used around stumps Mark. They have run over stumps and it broke the cantilevers off. Track is still working and has mileage left on it. It is expensive hour rate machine. The power company will probably clean up most of the mess since they are mostly on their R.O.W. The area I am cleaning is not on their right of way.

Dang, hope you didn't lose anything of value in your crushed shed. Sounds like that variety is a pretty risky crop.

It protected it from the NW winter winds and served well. Just the wrong variety. It is safe to much colder temps but the wind accentuated it's killing effect by drying the leaves.

Micheal, i know you are no stranger to hard work. This job is really a bad day. I have harvested canes for movie sets, tiki huts, party event companies, decorators, bong pipe makers, etc etc. I collected the canes for the movie 'Fled'. All 13 feet long and 3-4 inches in diameter. $20 per cane. And a big bunch of them. But shredding a grove up and burning it will do you in.
