im going to check all the tracking numbers tomorrow and see if all of you have got the boxes yet ! Hi Roy and all, I am still in Panama, so I can't check my mailbox back home. I assume the box arrived or will arrive soon, so please don't hold up everyone for me. I will be starting tumbling much later than everyone else, but I still should have plenty of time since I use a vibe and some people are strictly rotary. Of course the guys that do final polish for weeks (you know who you are!) will have an advantage, haha. Seeing all the pics of the material sure does make me anxious. Thanks! - Mark i just checked all the slips and yours had a red alert if i understand it rite you had your mail fowared to a different location if there is a issue just let me know i have a extra box left over just in case

Haven't seen any "during" pics yet. I'm assuming almost everyone has gotten started. I have. Most of us have our before pics up already.
I took pics of the rough after I smashed it up and a couple of the loaded barrels. I know we want lots of pics but I don't want to violate the spirit of the blind vote. What I have doesn't give too much away.
Go ahead and post "during" on our own?

So yeah .... I took a hammer and chisel to the rough I got from Roy. As usual some broke just as I'd hoped and some shattered crazily. Here is what I came up with, a bunch of tumble sized pieces, a bag of chips and some unbroken pieces in the center of the picture. They might get broken as well or cut if it gets warm enough soon enough .... This piece I am going to keep and hand sand then polish. The cut is smooth and I think it will make a nice specimen/display .... The 30th was a Sunday which happens to be my normal clean out day. Feel like I got really lucky in that respect. All the broken stuff went into two 3# and two 6# barrels and are happily rolling along .... Good luck and happy tumbling everyone !!!

I was thinking the other night that photographic skill will be as much or even more important in this "contest" as tumbling/polishing skill. It is very difficult to take pics that truly show off your rocks to their best. So often the true shine simply does not show up well. I really like this simple competition and I think the "rules" and format are perfect, but everyone that is super competitive should realize that their photographs may disappoint them. I think that everyone will be a winner in this contest. Thanks again Roy and John for setting it up!!

Mark, I think the same could be said for the KCC. Photo skills (and camera capabilities!) play a huge role. I think you'll all have a great time with this little contest. Yes, thanks Roy and John! Jean

I figured I had already won when I opened up the FREE medium flat rate box full of GREAT tumbling rough. Its all for fun now. Chuck yes Chuck, I think the opportunity to do a group activity with the GREAT and FREE material is terrific fun. A bonus will be if we can share info and learn from each other, e.g. "I found the Wild Horse picture jasper polished best with ......" It would be really fun if most people can post "in process" pictures so we can learn and compare. I look at it as an opportunity to learn as well as have fun. And maybe we can learn better ways to photograph our gems. I have a light tent, but have found the rocks look more shiny if you actually have many small high overhead lights on the rock so that there are multiple reflective highlights. The tent works excellent to get a complete and true picture of the rock as a specimen without glare or shine, but that really isn't what I usually want to show off, ha. Almost everything this novice knows I learned from the patient and kind people on this forum. Y'all are really great! (yahoo!!, planning on rockhounding trip tomorrow on the Changuanola River. If anything great I will post pics. Just had a earth tremor - after settling from the Chile quakes I guess.)

I agree with everything you just said, Mark. It would be nice to learn from each other as we move along. This could be a cooperative competition. Of course, I'd still love to beat the reigning champ (I'm talking to you, Chuck!).
The photography is what has me the most worried. My daughter has a light tent too, but I agree that the rocks look better with lights reflecting off of them. One thing I've never tried is photographing outside. By the end of this contest, it might be warn enough to go outside and give that a try.
Chuck, I have to agree that I felt like a winner just receiving this material. Thanks Roy!
