so..let me get this right....yaw like that thick slurry as shown by tkvancil in rough or not . 7 teaspoons 46/70...6 lb tumbler...3 or 4 days....rocks begin to clank....when they start clanking...i add 4 more teaspoons of 46/70...after an hour or so...no more clanking of stones...after 7 days check for fractures...from clanking that did happen....i just add more grit as before...but others may clean and just do their thing. no pics yet...just kinda rolling for now...kinda like comparing notes ...kev.

yes, I would like to know other's opinions. I usually change out before it gets this thick on agate/petwood/jasper, as when I squeeze this thick of slurry between my fingers it feels totally gritless, just slippery. I like to move it along faster by constantly having it with more grit. maybe I am doing it wrong.

I don't really aim for slurry this thick, but I think that it shows that a lot of rock has worn away. Since that's the goal, I'm happy to see it.

Its great hearing all these different strategies and we only at week 2,lol honestly I have never given much thought to the rough grind. I am pretty set in my ways and have never really experimented a whole lot in that stage. When kingsley had the deal on 80 grit I switched from my 46/70 to the 80 but I really thought it slowed me down so now I am back to 46/70 now. I do not let my slurry get that thick but that don't make it right or wrong. I wont be doing a full clean out till week 4. At that point I'll narrow this whole thing down to one or two 3 pound barrels of possible candidates to concentrate on. I have my eye on a secret weapon but at $350 I am having a hard time pulling the trigger (and no it's not a tumbler ). Chuck

i will say what i think it really is ...and i may be wrong. when your stuff gets that thick...it's the matrix from what you are tumbling...when it get's that thick it really needs to be discarded...just a bunch of soft stuff that your rocks kind of discarded....just my opinion . once you reach the harder stuff...thick grit should not be a big problem....once again just my opinion ..kev.

I'm worried about the secret weapon. Chuck just made a boatload of money at that show, so I know it's burning a hole in his pocket. But what could this weapon be?

After everything starts to round off pretty good the slurry doesn't get nearly that thick. Kev,(cpdad), is probably close to or right on with his opinion. And yup it was discarded. I'm a weekly cleaner outer.

I will be doing a full clean out on Weds. I usually let my rough 60/90 go for 10-14 days then do clean out. I will be checking all stones and adding more for next 10-14 day run. I am running two 6# lortone barrels now and will narrow down to one 6# for 220 grit.

It's been another five days, so I did another clean out. This time I could feel a little grit left, so I think I'll run longer next time. Actually, I might open early a couple more times just to get my cleaning day back to Saturday. I took out a small handful of rocks today, mostly small ones. Looks like I forgot to photograph one barrel.

well..came home today..and motor is fried on my old star diamond 6 lb..it's kinda old serial number 1601 ...that's a huge bummer..that's what i use for all my roughing...i now have to move to my 3 lb tumblers...that sucks because my 3 lb tumblers are dedicated to diff grits. it also sucks because i had larger rocks from the box in the 6 lb...now i have to cull them down to fit the 3 lb....makes choice more difficult. i have a question though...where in the world did this rough come from...no complaints at all ...me gots me some of everything...just asking...i got blue glass...obsidian..pre tumbled stuff..pre tumbled slabs....carnelian...banded agates....picture type stuff...all kinds of wood. a few display pieces i am keeping....like a piece of carnelian that looks like an alligator head ...and what i believe is a piece of massive quartz with large black coal looking inclusions...will get pic of carnelian alligator ...just wondering...kev.

Did my second clean out on Sunday the 13th. The 6# barrel with jaspers is rounding nicely. The volume was down enough that I combined the 3 pounder of jasper into the 6# load. The two barrels with agate and wood are not faring as well. The rocks are pretty rough still. This is pretty much as expected, jasper always seems to rough out faster than agate. Seems odd to me as they are of similar hardness.
Four pieces showed some good sized cracks and got the hammer and chisel treatment. Twelve small jaspers were ready to move out, sized about 1/4 to 5/8 inch. One agate was also ready although I can't credit my process on that. It was well rounded when it went in, not sure if nature or a previous tumbler did it. So I'm running two 6# and one 3# now. Hope it gets warm soon I'd like to be able give those agates some help on the grinder or edge of the tile saw blade. Hey Kev.... sorry to hear 'bout your fried motor. Bad luck and bad timing for sure.

Here is a pic of second weeks barrel. As you can see the slurry is not as thick as the first week. Same formula. With all the edges and soft stuff ground out it gets less viscous.
