I just finished my fourth clean out. I've been doing them every five days, but I'm going back to once a week now because I've noticed some unused grit. I haven't taken pictures of the last two clean outs, because there's not much new to see. I have a decent handful of rocks ready for the next stage and the rest of the rocks are losing a lot of volume. When a first started, I had two six-pound barrels and two three-pound barrels full plus about a six-pound barrel's worth of rocks that wouldn't fit. Today I eliminated one three-pound barrel and everything fits in the others. It's amazing how much rock grinds away. I could have fit everything in the two six-pounders, but I have a couple of white rocks that have frosted badly in the big barrels, so I want to try them in an overfilled small barrel.

I will do my fourth clean out on Tuesday before I leave for two weeks of fishing in California and Arizona. A few are ready for the next stage and more will be ready on the next clean out. I noticed since I "charge" my barrels I can feel some grit at clean out so I've been pouring the slurry and rinse water into five gallon buckets and after it sits for a day to settle I pour the majority off and the stuff at the bottom I let dry in the sun. I will use this to jumpstart my slurry after clean outs along with new grit. If I run out of grit down the road I can use this as well, I don't like to waste anything. Being new to tumbling I'm going to need some coaching on the next step in a few weeks. Never finished a batch yet. It's amazing how rocks can change in a few weeks.

Did the third cleanout Sunday the 20th. Between 3 barrels, two 6# and one 3#, I pulled out 31 pieces ready for the next stage. Six small agates less than dime size. Twenty five pieces of jasper, six of those between nickel and quarter size and the others all smalls. Smaller pieces always seem to finish up faster from what I can tell. Here is a pic of the "jasper" barrel before grit and water was added. A few pieces of agate in there along with a lot of junk quartz "smalls". Pretty colors

Wow, there really are some pretty colors in there. You've taken more out than I have.

I just did a clean out after eight days. At this point, everything fits in two six pound barrels with room to spare. I might run a partial load in the Lot-O after the clean out next weekend. Untitled

Thanks for the pic Rob. From what I can see there we have similar material and have made similar progress. I also am down to two 6# barrels.
I pulled out 53 pieces this week ready for the next stage. Only eight of them have any size, around the 1 inch range. The rest all small, dime size or less.
I recently bought a set of imported diamond grinding wheels and put them to use this weekend. Chucked one up in my cordless and ground some bad spots out of several pieces of the jasper that looked good except for the one bad spot. Only took the grinding wheel to one agate piece to remove a spawl. With any luck those will smooth out and be ready next week.
Once again the Jaspers and even the Petwoods are shaping better and faster than the Agates. Any one else noticing the same?
I got a fist sized piece of Green Tree Agate in the original box. Broke it up with hammer and chisel to tumbling size. I've rolled this stuff before. Came from the Rocksheds mixed rough packages. All of it I've done seems to tumble open more and more pits. Any one ever have any luck with this stuff?
I have only polished agate and jasper together one time in a rotary. They came out fine. Do they also do well together in a vibe?
S'all fer now.

I've been doing a little work on the flat lap each week to take out particularly bad spots too. It's my first time tumbling pet wood, and it's more challenging than I realized. I have a few pieces that are shaping up nicely, but a bunch have fractures along the grain lines that are going to need to be broken or something, I would say that the picture jaspers are shaping up faster than the agates for me too.
I've never done green tree agate, so I can't comment on that , but have done other rocks that do what you described. I had that problem with some Lavic jasper. Some of that had some porous areas that just never went away. Other pieces of the same rock came out shinier than any rock I've ever tumbled, though.

Green Tree and moss agate are tough for me too. I've had very pitted tumbling rough and I've also hadt killer luck with solid almost pitless moss and tree agate I bought from a member here. I thinks it's formation into rich makes for it to come with lots of inner pitting.
I've been breaking down the moss agate into very small dime size pieces.
Can't wait to see you're results.
Cheers, Matt

Hey gang, I've been quiet on RTH but my tumblers haven't Here's a pic of my roughing stone soup I'm going through after a couple round of 40/70 and a round of 60/90. Still a ways to go as I've had to go out of town meeting then tumble with grit ask broken down. It's murky waters but I have been seeing some of the coolest colors come out in this material. I may have to post two photos at the finish line. One for my favorites and another for ID request and where can I get a hold of stone of this unknown to me material? he he I haven't finished sorting out the batch yet but here is barrel I'm filling up for 120/220 polish stage. Lastly, FISH!?!?! I pulled this carnilian agate out to check its progress and it looks like there is a fish skeleton inside. Ids it possible to find fossils in agate? It was getting dark so I went inside to take a 8 meg cell photo. I'm going to pull out the eye loupers tomorrow in the sun and have a deeper look. Regardless of the results it's still pretty cool looking. Happy grinding everyone, Matt Sent from my SPH-D710 using proboards

Hey Matt
Nice pics and thanks for putting them up. Looks like your making good progress. From what I can tell you broke your rough into smaller pieces than I did. Might be the reason I feel like my progress is slow.
The fish skeleton is way cool even if its only an accident. I have two or three snails in my collection that look to be the same material as the host rock they are in. Not agate but definitely a quartz type rock. Guess it's possible.

I've only brook down about 5 percent of the material into smaller pieces. I used small and medium porcelain media and filled 2 12 pound barrels. Also used 40/60 grit twice on them and more 60/90. I like to polish martial as large as I can so I add andgo through a lot of filler media to to the barrels to keep my size percentages of small medium large material just right for tumbling.

Hard to tell size on a computer screen I guess. I have been after larger polished rocks in general lately. Asked for and received a 12# barrel to put on my QT66 tumbler but have yet to use it.
From my experience the 6# barrels I've been running are more aggressive than the 3# barrels I also run. Are 12# barrels more aggressive than 6# barrels?

I feel the 12 pound is only more aggressive because I use 40/60 grit in them. I was told somewhere that 40/60 grit is harder on barrels 6 pounds or less. I'm sure it's hard on my 15 to but it does the trick. There are lots off variables too, water, grit, material, size of rock, amount of different size of rock, barrel speed, machine level, temperature and so in that's required for all size of barrels. My opinion of larger barrels and their aggressive nature in tumbling is that with a larger barrel, their is more space for movement and thus more chance for frosting and hard banging that will slow down the process.
If you maintain a good mix of sizes whether it is tumbling media (ceramics), or the actual rocks have a good enough mix to their sizes to allow the rocks to tumble and not bash into each other is how you will determine success in tumbling... all large pieces will take a lot longer and cause more frustration than a good mix with plenty of mid to small pieces to allow the grit to be carried and fill in the spaces that would normally be empty allowing the large piece to bang heads!!
