Try grinding a window on one end to see if you can see cell structure. You don't need to destroy the end. Just a dime sized window should do.

It looks like a concretion to me, grayfingers, but not sure. I wouldn't know a fossil if it bit me on the leg, but it looks similar to a concretion I have in my collection.
