There are spill detecting LED's that turn from green to red voiding the warranty. Clever. You purchase warranty voiding features. But it is numero uno claim in damaged laptops. They also have a jig they put the computer in that measures bends and dents. Testing for mechanical impact or crush.
Spills NOT covered. The thin design is totally vulnerable. The liguid goes right thru the keys and ruins the motherboard. Perhaps the cost of reduced weight or selling more machines...
The Mac is a work horse and seems to not be burdened with virus. But the worse complaint I have with windows is the onslaught is updates. And after switching to Yahoo advertisements seem minimal.
They are expensive though. Shelling out $1300 more dollars when budget allows to replace 9 month old laptop. ouch

My kitty and I share water, that is, I let her drink out of my glass. If the water is too low, I hold it tipped so she can get to it. However, if the water is too low in the glass and I don't notice, she sticks a paw into it. That's my Mac Mini behind the glass. One day last year, I didn't notice that it was low and that she was trying to reach it. Over it went onto my keyboard. After great effort, several letters still did not work. Got a new keyboard, and secured the glass as in the photo. It works. I'd like to core a heavy chunk of wood, so the glass doesn't need tucking in each time I take a drink. James, I think you could weld a big open bezel shape onto a heavy base, leaving a slot open for the coffee mug handle. Tippy cups are kind of small! IMG_2234 by Pat6489, on Flickr

You do realize that the cat licks his butt right before he drinks from your glass, right?

I almost forgot. You can use a remote keyboard too. A remote keyboard is the solution! And get a membrane for the keyboard. The wireless keyboard would be fine. A desk top is not vulnerable to damage from keyboard spills. never thought about it I figured they have a seal to protect the guts. Great idea foxtail and thanks

IMG_2234 by Pat6489, on Flickr That is an interesting arrangement you have there Pat, with your cat. The bezel trick eh? After this experience I am going to do a remote keyboard. I think it is the safest. Keyboards are inexpensive. It never struck me that the entire laptop(at least a Mac Book) is about instant toast with even a light spill. They say a cat has the cleanest mouth. Are you sure you should drink behind it?

Cats have filthy mouths. Full of some of the most vile microorganisms known.

Rather than thread jacking I should post the whole story in it's own thread, but I know someone who almost lost a finger due to nasty bacteria in a cat bite.

Mark K, I called the vet and was told it was fine to share my glass of water with the cat. Rockoonz I read recently that cat bites are very bad due to the tooth going in deeply, delivering a dose of bad. However, cat scratches are not bad, unless you are allergic to cats. jamesp That's awful about your spill on the keyboard killing the entire computer. I cannot imagine what a remote keyboard is! I really like my Mac Mini. Don't own or want a laptop.
