I took a batch of Lake Superior stones out of the Lot-O last night. There's quite a variety in this batch. Some unakite cabs: This one is tiny, but I like it. And here is one of the biggest rocks I've ever done: I think this one is feldspar. I'm not sure what the word for it is, but as I tip it back and forth in the light, it reflects light back in a cool way. My daughter said it looks like a fish scale. Here are a few small, unusual looking rocks: This rock looks better in the first photo. It was pretty cool looking, but the quartz took a beating. The one on the bottom of this picture is chert from a remote beach near Copper Harbor, MI. I had it left over from a batch I did earlier. A piece of unakite also snuck in this batch. And lastly are some casualties. I've never had a rock frost as badly as the one in the lower right of this picture. It's the only rock in the whole batch that did this. It must be very wimpy.

In your unusual rocks photo, the one at 12 o'clock looks like it might be a sagenitic agate. The one at 9 o'clock almost looks like an eye agate, but not quite. Both are cool.

Nice batch and nice variety. I really like the small eye agate looking piece. Funny how sometimes the smalls are so attractive....

That feldspar looks like orthoclase - which is good to see because I have some big chunks of it that are in line for the saw and I was hoping would shine up. A lot of the time I'm finding if there is any of the chattoyance in them folks are calling them "moonstones" - I typically think of moonstones as the translucent feldspar with a blue flash, but in any case Feldspar is right.
Great batch as always, your cabs look really nice.

That eye agate is cool. And the cabs. Like your stuff Rob. The entire mix is unique. Looks like you are in the cab business too.

Those unakites held there shape good in the tumbler and took a great shine. I think I like that sagenite looking one the best (the one above the one with orbs/eyes)

So "chattoyance" is the word for that interesting reflective quality? I've heard of that, but I wasn't sure exactly what it was. Is that the same as "flash"? I really didn't like that rock that might be sagenite much, but now that it has a name, I'm more interested. It's just a little rock and looks like it came from a larger rock. It's wedge shaped, like a slice of orange. Do any of you know if sagenite can be found in Lake Superior? Here are a couple more pictures: This is the rind side of the orange:

Ok, I just looked up sagenite agates. I don't think that's what I have. There are supposed to be hair like filament inclusions, but my rock isn't even remotely transparent.

I was just saying it had a "sagenite" look to it. The spray of filaments pattern. Cool looking what ever it is. I have only had one slab of what I bought as "sagenite" and this was the cab I ended up with. That's what I was thinking of when I seen the pattern on yours. Chuck

I wish my rock was half as cool as that. Wow. It's like a wheat field grew inside.

Chattoyance may not be that general, I know it is the word used to describe Tiger's Eye. I think Flash is probably good.

Nice variety of colors! You do an amazing job of tumbling various types of stones, yet achieving a super nice shine!

Yes, you can find sagenite in Lake Superior rocks and they don't have to be transparent. Not all sagenite has the wheat look. It often looks like just like your rock, like needles lined up along the edge of the rock.
