About 12 inches long. Narrow dimension allowed long saw travel to cut all the way across. Macro of skin looking down on corallites

You picked a good piece to split, looks like Ma Nature is pretty good at crochet, on a very small scale. That's quite a pic., thanks. Larry

Pieces like that that can be sawed in balanced halves with the rind in tact are set aside for display use. You can see where a test chip was taken off the backside to see if it had decent color. The bleach white skin is popular as interior decorating in beach cottages. It was pried out of white clay and protected from the organic dark coatings. Probably would avoid heat treatment due to rise of cracking it. I like the pseudo word of Carlos'. The hammer that knocked the chip off is called a kiknockulator.....

The silicification process can do weird things. Like geodes, you never know till you saw it. I do not know why everything silicified in such mass down there. If I had a 30" or 36" saw and a stronger back I could really put on a show. Plenty of 12"-24" corals laying around down there. Like your pet logs, too big to wrestle.

There is such a lot of pretty in coral. Macro looks like dandelions. You got to go on an expedition w/me Pat. Not sure that i could keep up w/you, but would give it a try. I wish the logistics were simple as I would take more people w/me. I took the neighbor girl on a 12 mile kayak journey. We hit water hyacinths that had taken over the river at about mile 10 and had to drag the kayaks for 2 miles thru the woods and swamps. Got to her truck at 2 AM. She had a blast and I was totally worn out. Will never forget that trip. Water Hyacinths

That's a beauty cut in half and love your macro shot, jamesp!! I cheated Jan. The lens has a mickey mouse switch that does great macros. But is really a zoom portrait/scenery lens. 2 in 1
