This is Maggot. She is severely spoiled. At an Atlanta in town pizza restaurant. She is 3 years old and bred for the first time 2 weeks ago. She is eating a lot and wandering around the house in the late night hours. I would say she is pregnant.

She seems to have taken up w/Daddy. She must be short on smarts ha. Notice the carpenter bee to the right of my head. That is what she(and me) is focused on.

She's beautiful, jamesp, and a mighty large lap dog. Looking forward to seeing her first litter of pups. The little monsters are due June 1. They are a lot of work Jan. If you want to volunteer as a puppy sitter let me know. After 'sitting' w/them for an hour you will be very ready to go back home. She was bred to a 2 time national champ. The show stuff is Denise's concern. They are all just hounds to me. I think Denise's blood line had 3 entries at Westminster this year. They get royal treatment. I am #4 in order of importance. 3 dogs and then me !!

Laughing at the photoshop deed Bill. Imagine a topless bar for the background. Great blackmail potential.

Jim that is a real nice pic. Hope she has an easy pregnancy. I am worn out Scott. It's been crazy busy. Got stiffed $9000 by a customer that bankrupted on me. Maybe the pups will cover the loss...

$9000!!! OMG....
He can buy again. Just give me $9000.....
sheesh!
There ain't no money in dogs. I studied that business. Unless you are getting $3000ea or more. With all the time/food/vet bills $1500 puppies are a break even at best.

You are right Scott. Denise has her own stud dogs thru deals and puppy swaps. She is about a Vet and can do her own shots whelping etc She is at $1700 per pup and has 10 pups on average. Costs are running 2.5 pups. So she still clears a chunk. Free me the pup sitter helps a lot.

I do all my own shots and experience makes for good medicine. I guess most of the medicines are available for livestock.
Still $5000 a year in dog expenses isn't cheap. You guys are lucky your breed makes 10 pups and doesn't need a vet to help them mate (think american bulldog). I had a customer that had american bulldogs and it cost her $3000 in vet bills just to get a bitch pregnant. 4 babies and all the other expenses made $3000 puppies a break even for her.
Good for you guys that ingenuity and sweat equity makes the deal profitable. I am proud to know you.

You are very right, small litter dogs like Bull Terriers and Bull Dogs are impossible to make money on. I think my wife picked the RR's for their character and build in the beginning. I don't think it was ever based on income. She has repeat customers and other sales that involve co-ownership rights that have breeding rights sold w/the dog. That is key to success. We rarely breed a dog three times, usually just two. But she probably has 6-8 females living in pet homes that she can breed. The RR's are in big demand so people will sign such contracts to get a dog. Same contractual agreements for males that she can use as studs. Her Lenny got bred 6 times in the last year in exchange for a pup out of his litter or $$$. Her blood line is in demand too. Making for some interesting customers-arms dealers, doctors, celebs and people that have too much money that want to be seen in the show ring. Her sales are influenced by the blood line's success in the show ring. But I have seen her turn down sales to some handlers that treat them like livestock. Show homes and pet homes- we like the pet homes that can afford a handler to finish the dog. Breeder homes are pretty much avoided, unless the dogs live in the house and it is a not a puppy mill. Like Florida is full of mills and once you get that status you will have a hard time selling anything in this breed. A lot of the owners are lawyers; if they find out Phidos' sister got in the hands of an unscrupulous breeder and broken the contractual rights set aside in the owner's contract have been broken the lawyers come out of the woodwork like flies. My wife is shrewd when it comes to protecting her offspring. But rides me hard and puts me up wet. All interesting business.

PS Her friend Debbie had two females come into season. she got a stud dog to stay at her house and bred both of the females. The pups were 3 weeks apart, 15 in one and 17 in the other, but two died. She had 30 pups. They about wore her and her girlfriend out but they whelped and sold the whole batch. The litters Lenny has produced average 13 pups. So his delivery is good. Once they hear about the big litters others want to breed to him. (litter size f(of female)) but delivery can be important. And his young dogs are winning at a very young age. The biggest cost is testing for bad genes, hips eyes ears and a bunch of other stuff. The testing is key to a good breeding program this day and age. DNA testing is utilized also.
