Probably within a couple months I'll be selling my entire lapidary collection (saws, grinders, polishers, rough, slabs, etc) and I'm trying to get ideas on ways to sell it all. I'm not particularly interested in an auction, yard sale etc, but would rather sell it all en masse or at least in larger "chunks" as opposed to selling a few slabs or pieces of rough. All the equipment is pretty new and well cared for.
Part of the problem will be in the packing and shipping process as well as the cost for everything and I imagine I'll have to compromise on the latter.
Any idea about how to go about this would be appreciated.

You are in a good place to start the process now, on this forum. Make a list of the major stuff and maybe a basic description of the rest. Would what you have fit in a pickup? Or what would be needed to move it all? Also what city are you in? Condition of any grinding wheels and blades would be very helpful for any potential buyers. I may even be interested myself. Good luck in this venture.

A couple suggestions.... (I left some over on the other board for you too). Don't wait. Start selling them now, for you'll find it takes time to find buyers, and things aren't just going to sell overnight, unless you are so low in price you're giving them away. Put them on every Craigslist within 2 hours drive time. Send flyers with pics, and etc to every rock club, lapidary shop, rock shop, etc within 2 hours drive. Take pics, and put them here. Let folks know where you are so they can decide whether to travel or not. Put them on every rockhound board you can find. Let people know whether it's local pick up only, if you're willing to crate up and ship as long as they pay the costs, etc. And yes, put them on ebay, but give them plenty of time and let folks know about shipping charges, etc. Clean them up so people can transport them without a mess. They sell for more that way anyway. Advertise the same as above for your new home. You might find cabbers starving for equipment where ever you are moving or even along the route you're driving. Last but not least, if you run out of time, steam, whatever, consider giving them to someone to sell on consignment so you don't have to sell so darn cheap. And if you have a 14 inch Lortone drop saw, I'm interested. Hope this helps! Phil

I would think as big an area with Austin and surrounding cities you could find buyers that would pick it up.Good luck!

I make take you up on it later after I get my act together regarding what I want to do with everything else. For you and others - wrapping up packages, even smaller ones may not be practical given the physical limitations I have. We'll just have to wait and see.

I decided to down size a few years ago. I decided to sell at a few cents a pound. The people that came wanted to hi-grade at that price. I did sell a couple of tons but I will not sell that way again. I recommend selling in lots or buckets so they do not leave you with scraps that few want. I have been to auctions and that is the way they do it. Don

Thanks to all for your thoughts, prayers and suggestions. It wasn't my intent to inject health, but...
You've given me some good ideas and I will follow up with them when the time comes. I don't have all that much rough but I have robably about 750-1000 slabs. I've got a good idea of the value of my equipment and realize I won't be able to get anywhere near what it is worth but at least someone else will be able to enjoy it. That's the problem with buying new and dying early! (that's a joke for those who just gasped!)

We're praying your health will improve. While it will help you to get people to haul it away for you, putting a few nicer rocks on top of a bucket of inferior may be considered by some to be a less than honest way to sell rock.

To be clear, I'm not intending to sell what I have because I need the money. That isn't the case. I just want what I have to go to someone who needs it at a reasonable - to both - price.

I know some of how you feel, health wise, and how frustrating it can be to not be able to do this stuff with the passion you have felt for it. I have been down ad out for quite a while now, and I know of others too that have been fighting the battles. I can only say that I will add you to my prayers, and hope for the best for you & yours.
I am also interested in equipment, especially as both my small trim saws are down now, and I am trying to work towards a cabbing machine soon too. (gonna give the rest of them peoples a run for the K.C.Contest... LOL)
But my intent is not to promote myself. My hope is that you will do well and continue to do well for a long time. Best of luck on the road my friend. Mario
