Hello all I am just getting my feet wet here. Just wondering about a salt and pepper piece of granite my daughter found. Its shaped in a heart and I was wondering if I tumble it if it would deform the shape of the heart? I would like to get it polished up all nice and shiny then get a necklace made so my daughter can give it to my wife for her birthday! Thanks in advance for any help!

It won't deform as much in a vibratory tumbler. It will deform much more in rotary tumbler. Granite is made of several different minerals that have different hardnesses. Because of that, it usually undercuts when you polish it. Undercutting is when part of the rock wears away more quickly than other parts. Sometimes it's worse that others depending on the granite. The two rocks in the top of this picture undercut badly. I think this is the first batch of rocks I ever tumbled. It will give you an idea of what you can expect from granite.

Welcome to the group. It's a great place to talk and learn about rocks and tumbling.
Dittos to what Jugglerguy said about the granite. I like tumbling the stuff myself and often have some in most of my mixed batches. My most recent experiences tell me that the undercutting issue is more prevalent in vibratory polishing than in rotary polishing.

I didn't know that, Ken. Mine were done in a vibe.
