Been there many times, back when it was relatively undiscovered. Many folks don't know that the odd name "Owyhee" was the way early explorers mispronounced "Hawaii." Several Hawaiians, members of a trapping party, became temporarily lost in the back country and somehow the mispronunciation of their name stuck as a place name.
It's rugged but mostly waterless country. The roads are dusty and the days get very hot in summer. But the landscape is hauntingly beautiful in its own way, as Owyhee's images show. It would probably take several lifetimes to find all the wonders just within sight of the major landmark, Three-Fingers Butte. But be aware our government is in the process of "saving" the area as wilderness. Get as many rocks as you can while you can!
