On to the next one. Its the fourth try, to keep a promise to Warren (Disdero guys). The Eagle last year was the first part of our deal for two carvings in exchange for the wonderful material he had send me, and was destined for a friend of his. This June or July it will finally be worn to a Pow Wow (is that how you write that ? ) and a regalia has been build around it. I'm already eagerly looking forward to finally see the Eagle used for its purpose at the dance. But I'm sure, Warren will be just as eager for me to finally make the second piece happening. Something of special meaning to him to commemorate his father. A Cowboy and Miner. In the past I managed to mess up breaking things as they where rather forced (pick axe once and rim of hat twice). Now since last week the final piece of the puzzle fell into place (the setting), and suddenly I'm much further along than I ever was. Since taking these pictures, I spend a whole day on just the arm and hand on the left. Still not too happy with the angle and size of the hand, so will have to tinker a little more with it (hand is fixed now, so can't change that, but the angle of the underarm could still affect the overall look). Till here for now, Kurt

What is the material, KK? Disdero Agate from Canada. On large surfaces, this also works up as turtle back. Its the same material as the eagle last year (coming from the same piece) and similar to the first wolf and the bear 2 years ago.

That looks like some solid hard material kk. The old miner is a big subject change. Nothing gets in your way . 3 dimension art, to cool

That looks like some solid hard material kk. The old miner is a big subject change. Nothing gets in your way . 3 dimension art, to cool Yep, it is fracture free, and can take sculpting up to about a 48th. of an inch relatively easily, and thinner if you are very careful. 3D is a long time coming and is just an extension from what I had been doing for years now. Its just that I got to go deeper. Its still not real 3D but good enough for now. Need to practice this type of work if I want to have any chance at all at the Jade Symposium later this year. The only real difference that comes slowly into play, is targeted patience. Set a target for one aspect per day and then put the piece away for tomorrow. So yesterday, it was getting the arm. Today try to rectify the arm and hand. Tomorrow a poncho on the right side plus upper and lower arm, and hand and pick-axe on Friday. A schedule that takes a lot longer, but I like the results. The jade later, will need something like that too, only it will be a schedule for at least 30 different aspects. Here is as of right now: Till here for now, Kurt

Kurt, that is simply amazing! I'm sure progress seems to be crawling along at a snail's pace to you. But I think it is coming along rather quickly, you get so much done in just a day. The 3-D effect is stunning!
A great piece to commemorate Warren's father. I'm sure he will love it.

The Miner looks like it's coming along great, Kurt! Can you see the turtleback in the Disdero if it's backlit by the sun? Will you please ask Warren to see if his friend will snap a pic of the eagle when it makes its debut at the pow wow?

Jan, The turtleback effect is there, but drowned out by the carving.
Yes pictures will be taken and are promised to be send after the pow wow. It should have been last year, but a death in the family did not allow the construction of a new regalia at the time.

You're over here too, that's great to know! Looks just as good here as on the other page. Nice work no matter where.

Wow!!!!! Love that!!!!! One question... what is turtle back? A turleback is when the space where individual bubbles/biotroals (is that how you spell that?) join can be seen in the material once you removed the actual bubbles. It usually turns up in a lighter shade. It found in some agates but more often than not in things like larimar like here: www.etsy.com/market/larimar_turtlebackYou're over here too, that's great to know! Looks just as good here as on the other page. Nice work no matter where. Yes, RTH has always been a second home long before the storm-clouds appeared on the other forum the first time. And while Facebook has become the primary domicile these days, its always nice to return to where it all began for me. I would not be where I am without either of the two forums. So whatever happens, I will continue to support both in one way or another.

Beautiful! Not only fine details, but you gave character to that old man.
Have you been sculpting any other material before stone carving?

You keep getting betterer and betterer! You seem to be much more decisive abt what you want in a stone, too. Your vision is on a roll.

Thanks everyone. Beautiful! Not only fine details, but you gave character to that old man. Have you been sculpting any other material before stone carving? Adrian Characters become more important as things move along. My current undertaking for the World Jade Symposium will largely rely on the effect of character. Just hope I will get it somewhat right. Got two tries before I gotta submit my entry. Will show some progress-pictures from the beginning over the coming few days. Sculpting: Nahh, never did any of that besides the occasional snowman , and some futile attempts of carving some wood, trying to emulate my father as a kid. The stone that will go into his hand will be a Sapphire (only got heated ones, so I'm afraid it will not be a natural one, but will show well), still pondering about natural ruby (but that stuff has gotten expensive in the last few years, so I better keep it for a project that will stay with me).
