Halitedigger-looking forward to the article.
Foxtail-there really isn't a lot that any of us can do. Pretty much all of these decisions are made deep in the bowels of the bureaucracy in DC.
Typically there is a comment period, and sometimes a set of meetings about changes like this. No one goes to the meetings. The big enviro groups send out mailings to their members exhorting them to send in comments, since they are also big campaign donors they also have a big say in what the new regs will be.
I have met quite a few of our local BLM folks, we have two geologists working out of our district office and I have met and chatted with both of them. One is really sharp. I've also met some of the Forest Circus folks and our game wardens. With a couple of exceptions they all seem decent enough. Easier to meet these folks here than it is closer to the left coast; there just aren't as many people here.
Usually the decisions are all made before we even hear about them, the comments and hearings are just a formality. Part of the problem is the big enviro groups have so much pull, and there are no big groups like that on the side of people who want to do more than drive down the interstate and look out the window. I have recently sent in comments regarding the Shoshone NF management plan (which really wasn't too bad, which had the enviros screaming) and the proposals for the Red Desert area. Not that they care what I think. About the only way to find out about this stuff is to keep watching their websites-all the NF and BLM districts have one.
I've tried to be as calm and non-political as I can, and would be glad to discuss these issues further.
