Ha! I told you @shotgunner was gonna call you a bunch of wimps (well, actually he used the term pussies), for wearing snake boots, or even Kevlar chaps.

If it's eastern diamondback country, then there is nearly ZERO chance of being bit. They are microhabitat specialists utlizing old stumps/stumpholes. Now if the kevlar chaps keep the foxtails from sticking to my jeans and socks, then I am all for it.

Scott, I am scared of 6 foot diamond back rattlers. Call it a pussy if you want. But people get bit down here. Just like Florida has a lot more shark and gator attacks than the rest of the country will ever know. Sharks lingering and attacking on the beach of Daytona Beach almost shut the place down one year. It is a monetary issue that is kept secret to protect tourism. Cause that's where Florida gets it's money. It is standard attire to where chaps in diamond back territory. Again, you can convince the boys in S Georgia. I am not sure who gets eaten and bit, perhaps tourists from the greater LA area.

Oops, didn't mean to stir the sh!t. Scott is savvy in the way of snakes, where they live, etc. I would trust him implicitly to lead me into the brush where these nasty beasties abound, and feel perfectly safe. I just know how he feels about snake proof boots, etc.
You gotta pay attention, and don't put your hands or feet anywhere you can't see what is there.

I was there for that one. 12 people bit the two weeks before I was there and two more while I was in town. Still, I went swimming! The odds of being bit by a shark, when the sharks are actively biting, is infinitesimally small. Tens of thousands of folks in the water. Only a couple dozen got bit. I wasn't one! Ask your hard core rabbit and quail hunters (who wear the kevlar panties) "how many rattlers have you seen while wearing those?" and then when the answer is none or maybe one, then ask them "how many have actually bitten your snake chaps?" and the answer is ZERO. The need to wear them isn't there. The desire is. Like I said, if the foxtails from the grasses are a problem, then I see the need for protection.

Read more: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/65459/another-big-rattler-south-land?page=4#ixzz30vkVvvJq The city of Daytona is one of the last beaches in this country that allows vehicles on the beach. In other words, the cities along the Florida coast have jurisdiction over who can do what on the beach. I believe it is city property. To control garbage issues, safety, quarrels, and general property issues where people accumulate. And during shark migration it is usually a 'double red flag alert'. And not only is there not 'tens of thousands of folks in the water' there is no folks in the water. Because swimming is banned till they pass. Granted the migrations are often spinner sharks and sand bar sharks, but they do like toes and fingers. And if a shark is in 2 feet of water he is pretty much there for business; he is feeding. If the tigers and hammerheads happen in, even the surfers buggar off. Small sharks feeding at high sun is not a good sign. Best not to have your feet dangling off the surf board/raft.

I prefer to ere to the safe side. Snakes, sharks, asteroid (how do you prepare for that?) - something's gonna get ya in the end... No matter what you do! (snicker, snicker)
Chances are better you'll be offed by the two-legged variety of danger. More so in certain locations.

The 2 leggers are the absolute most dangerous critters on the face of earth Jean. I think I know which locations you are referring to

James, I know what you are thinking -
Not was I was talking about, big brudder. What I meant was the two-legged variety that will kill you for a gold chain around your neck, $5 in your wallet, iPhone, or keys to your car. Then there's the deviant ones, camped along the banks of a backwater crick down south. (thinking of that song from Deliverance, lol!)

It's easy to talk about not being scared of getting bit by a shark.until it happens to your fishing buddy wade fishing about 10' from you,50 yards off the beach, past the 3rd gut.happened to me about 15yrs ago at the padre island national seashore.my buddy got bit in the calf,I should say had his calf surgically removed by what was surmised as a 5-6' bull shark.almost bled out and died before I got him to shore.had to remove his leg at the knee.never the less ive either used a zodiac or kayak to set baits since the incident .better safe than sorry.no sense in tempting fate,I kinda like my appendages intact.ill tell you what though it was a life changing experience. Dave.

Dave. Lots of attacks never get reported Dave. It happens more than people think. Surfers are a common target when sitting on board. It's not big news cause it happens regular. Moot point w/the media. I experienced 2 people disappear on Amelia Island FL. Separate occasions. and both were within 2-3 hundred yards away. Pretty calm water and they just disappeared. The surf would have pushed them to the beach if they drowned. Certain it was sharks. It was 30-40 years ago when they used to catch 10-12 foot hammerheads regularly. Those things get big and are devious.
