ive searched the internet high and low. Havent been able to find anything like it. The cyad factor is what makes it different. There are thousands and thousands of tumbled Montana petwood cast agates but very few Cycads, from what I have been told.

bhiatt, that's a unique specimen. I have a large slab of something that Mel thought might be a cycad fossil.

Have you had it verified by an expert? I have quite a bit of Cycad, and it don't even come close to looking like that. Maybe there are many different kinds, I don't know.

That is freaking Awesome! I still have not been able to get an ID on the stuff we find here locally. One "expert" says cycad, another says sromatolite, another coral, and still another a pseudomorph after hexagonal dolomite. Now I'm leaning towards the last but dang some of the stuff I find has a woody look to it. Saw a hunk in the horse pasture yesterday that was really cool. I'll have to drag it home and take a pic.....Mel

Maybe there are many different kinds, I don't know. only the guy I got it from, Paul Clark, who lives in Montana where this came from and one of his Paleobotanist friends. So if an 'expert' said so its probably not.lol. In the second pic there are three areas that resemble the diamond pattern, imo. One right in the middle of the pic.

Cool rock Brad. River wear can do a lot of alteration. The local guy that finds stuff that is mysterious usually has the best idea. He may find other comparables that have less wear and make ID much easier.

Never really knew there were even petrified cycads in Montana. Did a little research. Some feller had documented them along the Yellowstone River in Montana back in the early 1900's. Nothing that comes out of the Yellowstone River is going to be perfectly preserved. Finding one with just hints, like this cycad provides, is a score.

Nice to know....My Nephew hounds the Yellowstone River all the time, bringing home agates, petwood and jaspers....We are headed out there this summer,so I can hound the river and take a peek at his pile of finds.... He just might have a piece of that-I have seen that type before"Cycads"....Thumbs up I have a huge piece of petwood about like that ( 25 pounder ) my saw hates it,took forever to cut one slice,so I just tossed it back into the corner..

25lb Montana is huge. From what I gather hearing chat from other Montanians is that anything over 4-5 pounds is big nowdays. Hope you find some good ones when you get back out there. The Yellowstone River is something Id love to see. My mom and dad sent me a video when they were on vacation of the Yellowstone River. River was killer looking. Gods river. Your recent Montanas that you have cut have been dandies.
