Agree Don. Often I've found the "hottest" color layers directly under the milky quartz cap. I urge caution in removing it. It's one of those "cut a little, look a lot" stones.

Yes, in general the white quartz cap must come off first to get down to the color layers, unless you want to incorporate it into an artistic carving. as far as finding the color layers go, I work an edge a little and see what's there. if I see something promising, I'll start exposing that layer through the stone by careful grinding and carving. If fire as already visible, I'll work any extra material on top of the color as close as possible. Once you have all the fire exposed and carved out, it's a matter of polish, polish, polish. I know this is a somewhat old thread but that little tidbit of info you posted gave me enough help to get me started on some Utah FA I will be receiving soon. At first I wasn't sure what I was going to do with it or how I would work on it to get to the colors. I'm slowly gaining confidence on how to approach the polishing process . I will start my own thread soon with pictures. I will continue to do more research.

Just got back from Opal Hill Fire Agate mine. Found of nice stuff in the road about three quarters of a milE b4 the mine. The mine is all wrecked trailers and trash, looks abandoned. No sign of fire agate around the mine or dumps. Only found it in the mine dump material used to fix the roads years ago.
Seen lots of fire agate cabbed as a regular cabochon here at the Q and at the Gem Club.
