I think I can tell after it is cabbed, but what do I look for in opalized rough?

As a general rule, any opalized portion will have a waxy look to it.

Opalized wood is waxy as Don has said. It is also more prone to chips and fractures, sometimes a bit softer, and to me, it somehow feels lighter in weight than agatized wood too. But maybe that's just me.....Mel

Thanks guys. I think I have had more opalized wood than I knew I had. I'll have to pay closer attention.

I'll second Mel's opinion to the letter. One place we hunt pet. wood, opalized runs about 50%, easy to pick out, and definitely lighter in weight.

Yuppers, opalized wood is brittle and breaks apart easily...I have some opal laying around somewhere in my shop, its off a piece of petwood...
