About 30 years ago when we first decided to collect rocks, we had to narrow the selection down. We chose quartz. It was abundant and not too pricey.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that some of my favorites were actually in the same family: the cryptocrystalline group: chalcedony, agate, chrysoprase etc.

Great page for beginners! Watching you guys throw these names and terms around blows my mind...I'm happy when I identify a piece of jasper right now!

kradz89 Your comment reminds me of my husband. He calls just about every rock an agate. He is right most of the time!

yeah, that's a good page, thanks for posting it vegasjames so newbies know about it. I go back and look at it every so often when I feel confused. Odd how I feel confused a lot more often than I did 30 years ago.
