Yep, that's why I love this place, lots of knowledge from good folks. Most my tools I either buy broken or missing most the parts and then rebuild it to fit my needs, I figure this way will be the best (cheapest ) way for me to learn how to use them if I completely know how they work

Still in the process of cleaning the saw, there was about half an inch of old dried oil/rock dust coating the entire interior. It's looking better but I still have a ways to go.

Looks like you have your ducks in a row. Just keep going. You are doing fine. I agree completely with "if you build it from scratch" you will know what is wrong with it and how to fix it! I got tired many years ago of those store bought machines, so now the reason for the operation is mine and only mine.

Thanks, luckily for me I still make my living with my day job, so building, cabbing, and faceting are more enjoyable without any deadlines looming overhead.

Need more help, I cannot find any information on this Faceting head. If anyone happens to have a pdf, manual, or a link that could help me rebuild the mast or any other parts to this piece I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Your faceting head was made by B&I industries and was sold by Sears, Earth Treasures and a few other retailers for about three decades. If I remember correctly B&I closed down around 1984. B&I made a 6" model and an 8" model of flat lap machines. With the 6" model the faceting head was mounted on a mast that was just a steel rod that was threaded on the lower end and screwed into the hole that the small swinging saw vise mounted in. You can see a picture of 6" B&I machine set up with the faceting head that someone sold on eBay recently by clicking on this link and then scrolling half way down the page to the original listing with photos. tinyurl.com/mjg4sz7Here is a link to someone's eBay listing of a B&I 8" lap that has the overhead saw vise attachment set up on it. Again scrolll half way down the page to see the original listing with photos. tinyurl.com/ogpxzheThe 8" B&I model required a mounting bracket for the faceting head like the one shown in the first photo below. But based on what I have seen from the flat lap you are building you would probably do better with a mast that has an attached base similar to the one on the Graves machine shown in the second photo below. I'm not sure if a B&I faceting head will fit on a Graves mast but think I have an extra Graves mast around here somewhere. I will try to find it and check if they will match up. Larry C.

I just noticed in the photo of your B&I faceting head that it has a 64 index with it. That is good. All of them I had seen only had a 32 index gear. Larry C.

Oh WOW, thank you soooooo much for these pictures. I am a very visual type builder and these give me a definite direction to go. I have been waaaay oversizing what I thought I was going to need. I was looking at table vise clamps, (stood on end with handle on top) but there was too much slop in the threading mechanism. I see I can down size a little in the bulk and get more refinement. Thank you sooooo much.

nvkermit1512 you are welcome! I was able to find my Graves brand faceting mast and the diameter of the post is 5/8". But I can't find my old B&I Faceting handpiece to see if it fits the Graves mast. If the B&I does fit a 5/8" mast then that may be your easiest route to go. I looked on the Graves web site in the "spare parts" link but didn't see a mast listed but I'm sure if you call them they could give you a price. But be forewarned the folks at Graves don't seem to have the best reputation for friendly customer service. Also my Graves mast is an old one so before you would order one from them you might want to ask and make sure they are still made 5/8" in diameter. Larry C.

Thank you again for all your help. With the pictures and your info I should be able to fabricate a mast. It will take a little bit to make, even living in a big city, it's easier to order Rolling Ball Tipped Set Screws from the internet. That will solve how to hold the head. The mast will be 5/8" rod, threaded at one end to attach a plate base (to keep it level and stable) and then a retaining knob to go under the table to secure it. A stop collar on the mast and then I will just need a miniature 3-way clamp to slide down the mast and have the Rolling Ball Tipped Set Screws to allow the Head to pivot. Thank you again for all your help.
