When I sold classic car parts on ebay I had a couple "fill in the blanks" text documents that I would cut and paste into my descriptions. Something to the effect of "let me know if you're in a hurry to get it, otherwise I ship once a week" was included in every description. Another note in the description was "wait till I invoice you to pay, the ebay calculator may charge you more than actual shipping so your actual shipping cost may be less, it will never be more" There would always be a few that paid immediately at the end of auction who must not have read it, and they sometimes paid quite a bit more since ebays calculator did not include FedEx ground which often was less for heavy bulky items. I often kept the extra shipping, called it "ignorance tax", and even added that fact to my descriptions, which seemed to have no effect on the percentage of people who obviously didn't read it.

I definately think a person could literally sell anything on Ebay given enough time. The two most important ingredients for success on Ebay is good pictures and good communication. Stu

eBay is a tough one. I'm working on getting a website going so I can deal with buyers one on one rather then have the middle man. It's a work in progress but check it out if you like to, oldschoolrockshop.weebly.com (not trying to post another ad just talking about what I'm working on)

With all due respect, that middleman at ebay seems to be the only one pushing you to the Post office to get your packages shipped out.

I ALWAYS send a email or message with the tracking number as soon as I ship! If I'm ever delayed in shipping for some reason I let the buyer know.

I don't sell on ebay anymore, but on Etsy, I, too, will send a personal note after the sale to thank them and let them know that they will receive another message with tracking AFTER it has shipped. I can't tell you how many times people have written to say that they really appreciated it. As a buyer, I don't like being left in the lurch. The guy who sells kaleidoscope jasper on eBay states all over his ads that he is a slow shipper. He tells you to expect it. You have the choice not to deal with him if it's a problem. It doesn't seem to hurt his sales, at all. People just want to know, that's all. I bought from him once and he is indeed slow. But, he sends extras to make up for it. Sounds like a good option for someone who knows he will be slow. The guy on ebay who sells kaleidoscope jasper says to leave him positive feedback cause it's the way he makes his living. He will not leave you positive feedback either before or after you leave feedback for him. When he first started selling the kaleidoscope I purchased a box of it that was so fractured I could hardly grind a decent cab. I have never purchased anything from him since. 39don

I've only left bad feedback twice in the years that I've been buying on ebay. I send feedback as soon as I've unpacked and inspected anything I've ordered. I also keep a blacklist of dealers who don't send feedback . They never get a second order from me.

To the best of my knowledge sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers.

To the best of my knowledge sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers. They can't anymore but they used to be able to. It has become so convoluted anymore it is not worth wading through. I stopped ebay about 5 years ago. I still buy stuff on there occasionally though, it is amazing what you can find on there. Tony

To the best of my knowledge sellers can't leave negative feedback for buyers. Yes, they changed policy a few years ago and only buyers leave feedback now. I think this was done to try to get more honest feedback. Once (under the old system) I received a non-working electronic part. After no help from the seller, when I left negative feedback, the seller bombed me back with negative feedback. This type of thing caused sellers not to leave feedback. One good work around was to have a separate buyer eBay account. Anyway, surprisingly it seems like eBay may have done a good move with this new policy. eBay usually stinks at protecting the buyer (and the seller for that matter, ha)

panamark after the feedback policy change on ebay I had several occasions where buyers would use the threat of bad feedback to get something for free or a reduced price. Most of the honest little guy sellers on ebay have been replaced with the mass drop shippers of cheap Chinese crap. They all have lots of bad feedback but look good due to the sheer volume of their sales.

They all have lots of bad feedback but look good due to the sheer volume of their sales. I have had a couple of situations when a buyer tried to extort me with the threat of negative feedback. It didn't work, Ebay is aware of that problem and the feedbaack was removed. When evaluating a seller's feedback you really have to look for how many revised feedbaacks the seller has. Those revised feedbacks were probably negative in the first place.

I've been really lucky both as a buyer and a seller on eBay since probably about 97 or 98. (Even with the kaleidoscope jasper.) Only one time do I remember having a serious problem with a seller. He was a real a**hole. Other than that, I've been pretty happy. I buy all manner of things there. I look for mom and pop shops and seldom buy from the big sellers. The little guys want to keep you happy. I've "met" a lot of really wonderful people and contacts through ebay. I understand that it has changed a whole lot for sellers since I quit (not by choice). I think the feedback change was a good one. Except that when etsy did it, I hated it. No way to check people out. So, maybe as an ebay seller, I wouldn't like it, either.

I do all of my selling on Ebay as "buy it now" which requires immediate payment at time of sale. If I do a best offer they have 4 days to pay and I rarely had a problem with non payment. I agree, I have met some very interesting people on Ebay. I even have a royal princess of Qatar who is a repaat customer of mine for some of our antiques.

Update: finally got the box of rocks today. They are nice and I am satisfied despite the delay. The transaction would have been just fine if as suggested, the seller had just said up front that the shipping would be slow. And then if he also followed up on it without the buyer having to open a case on eBay. Hard to know if that was the only thing that gets him moving though. I hope he can get it together.
