Howdy folks, I have not heard from old Lowell in a long time but last we spoke he wanted me to start taking type specimen pics for the old Mexico portion of the "Agate Index". So, I've been busily snapping away and sorting. Thought I'd shoot you a few of the pics just for alookin at. I'll try to post them as groups by type. Thanks for looking......Mel Hows about Mexican Moss types first? This one has several names but " Calico Moss" is common. Couple of the many varieties known as Vaquilla Agate: Pata De Gallo ( Roostertail Agate) Hi Fidelity Moss, sometimes Coneto Moss. Red Lightning Moss: Durango Moss. ( Indio Moss) This stuff comes in endless designs and colors with lots of reds and purples: Ojinaga Golden Moss ( Identical stuff found on the Texas side of the border too) Carneros Moss: Oops and finally Boquilla Moss Agate: Agua Nueva Moss: And rare Laguna Moss:

Those are so pretty Mel! Wow you guys have gorgeous stuff down your way. Thanks for sharing. More please.
BTW: I thought Pata De Gallo meant rooster's foot or cock's foot.

Mark, you are totally correct. As you may have guessed, I speak next to zero Spanish. I guess roostertail would be cola de gallo huh? Dealers have always called it roostertail because of the pattern's resemblance to the curving red and yellow feathers of a fighting cock's tail I guess, and Brad Cross in his book, refers to this type agate as pata de gallo. I'll admit, I have no idea where "rooster foot" comes in cause the agate don't look like a rooster foot to me? ?? Thanks for setting me straight......Mel

Wow. More beautiful agate. But Mel, what is this index of photos and where can they be viewed. I've missed something in my short time on the boards. I've done a search and turned up a bunch posts about it, and what it is. But can't seem to find where it is located Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to do this! It is great as a reference and eye candy to die for! Again, I LOVE every one of the slabs, it's Mel's Mexican agate virtual Museum!

Hey Mel, I am probably at the kindergarten level. And what I have learned is a mixture of native Indian spanish and mexican spanish. So I am definitely not one to be correcting anyone. As an aside, I once asked on an Air France flight if I could get a pillow for my wife. I didn't know the French word for pillow so I winged it with "cushon". I got a strange look from the flight attendant and then she explained a "cushon" was a pig in French. I am still trying to live that one down!

Patrick: Go to the cabochons section and about the fifth listing down is the post with the links to the Agate/Jasper database Lowell and I ( Mainly Lowell. Lowelll has the computer skills and I'm just the obsessive agate/jasper ID nut) have been working on for several years with the help of our RTH members.
Mark, *L* I won't tell you some of the embarrassing stories I have about me trying to communicate with all the Mexican workers when I worked as a biologist for the Ag Dept......Mel
