Howdy all, Well finally had a chance to do some carving and I decided to do a Dragon/Snake/Lizard type critter, lol, I won't know for sure what it is until I am all done. Decided to go ahead and post what I've done so far, hope yall like it. 1.Started off poking around little pile of ruby rough and noticed this fella 2.I used a white grease pencil and thought I saw a little lizard head poking out of the top 3. So I started removing some excess stuff out of the way (in my mind, this is what I saw) 4.And a little side shot 5. Noticed he couldn't move around easily, so I started removing excess from around his body 6. Now don't be shy, turn around so everyone can start to see what you look like
Well, that's all for now, it's 2am and the dogs look annoyed that I am still making a racket, lol. I will try to flesh more of him out in the morning and I will post more as I set him free, thanks for looking

Yep, looking forward to follow all the way through. Great to see someone else taking the time to realize their visual clues.

Well I learned something. Not all stones are equal, lol or even equal throughout themselves. While carving on the little fellow, I found out the stone had a fissure with some other material in it running through a portion of his head, yep, it popped off. Had to do a little corrective carving and reshape the head some. I noticed I kept running across little pockets (little ones the size of sand) and as the bit hit them the run off would be black, brown, and sometimes silver in color. Gonna toss it in the vibrator and see if it will take any kind of shine before I attempt any detail work. In the meantime here's two pics with his new face. 1. 2.

I was eating when I ran across this earlier so did not reply. Good to see you giving it a go and you have a nice start. You seem to have the depth perception so all you need now is practice. Two steps forward and one step back beats the hell out of the other way around. What is next? Jim

no dragon master here. Would be happy to get just one of those danged faces the way I got them in my head. . Keep going. The problems that you encounter will not go away, but solving them will give you invaluable knowledge for future projects. Don't give in, and ensue that you are going to finish this project. If needed, put it away for a while, but always with the intention to continue, and hence within sight.

Thanks for the support. Well another fissure showed itself. He lost a good section in the front. Oh well, that was the secondary reason I put it in the vibe and it worked. We will have to see how I can work around it. I will say one thing, he is not looking the way it was in my head, lol. Hmmmm, let's see, "You can't judge a Rock by its cover" and "Rocks are like grown up children, no matter how much you 'think' they should look, they got their own style and will look how 'they' want to" Another lesson learned, next time, don't use this particular type of rock

When you are carving, how do you keep the rock wet? Sheri

It looks great and hope you can work around the fissures in the ruby. Imagine ruby is difficult to carve due to it's hardness??

Yep, they say with Ruby having the hardness of 9 on the MOH's scale it's pretty hard. Figured I would learn on the hardest to force myself to take it slow and then try the others when I am better at it. You're gonna love this, I use a cake pan lid. It has a lip around the rim, it's sturdy, plastic, it's about 3/4" thick and large (9"x13"). I fill it up 1/2 to 3/4 full, enough water volume to stay cool. I dip the rock and bit (using flex shaft, suspended above desk) into the water as needed. In the first two pictures the rock is sitting in the lid.
