Hey Gang, I have a question about what company used red paint to identify their Lapidary equipment market. I know of Sears Craftsman is Red today but their Lap equipment sold was grey and maby powder blue? I picked this flat lap and gravity feed 6in cutter to clean up for small cutting jobs. It looks like something that might of been sold by sears but only the legs are cast molded and painted red. The lap housing and water catcher is unpainted aluminum, where craftsman/B&I and similar were all cast molded and bolted together. The paint looks original and came only with the vise, wight and MK 6in blade. The wood mounting plate already had this put together and used when I bought it. Any ideas what I may have. I've been google searching and not seing anything that resembles a brand with red paint. Oh god it's not Harbor Frieght red lol JK. Thanks for your help. <a href="http://s989.photobucket.com/user/mattatya/media/20140604_195101_zps9cccf3fb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/mattatya/20140604_195101_zps9cccf3fb.jpg" border="0" alt="Flat Lap Gem Cutter photo 20140604_195101_zps9cccf3fb.jpg"/></a> [img src=" i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/mattatya/20140604_194230_zpsf56ed0ea.jpg" src=" " alt=" "] [img src=" i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/mattatya/20140604_195056_zps10f119d6.jpg" src=" " alt=" "] [img src=" i989.photobucket.com/albums/af16/mattatya/20140604_195101_zps9cccf3fb.jpg" src=" " alt=" "]

My guess judging from the 2 holes at the front with an oval around them would be that it's home built. Either from a kit or parts salvaged from a broken machine. Nearly everyone way back when used heavy cast aluminum. That pan appears to be an old deep cake pan. Regardless, it looks like a workable machine, and should give you many years of use.

I was wondering who was going to pick up that unit. Good deal!

Very similar to my first flat lap except, as Don said, the original heavy aluminum tub replaced with a large aluminum pot with the handle(s?) removed. Was that the one on craigslist up there?

Yes, It looked like the price dropped and I jumped. I like that its portable and will most likely use it to cut small slabs or swap the blade out for a 60 grit AI wheel to pre shape rough rock before tumbling.

Diamond flat laps will work as well, either 6 or 8 inch depending on how big the tub is.
