Tried to figure out which forum to put this in, but sort of involves rocks so I'll put it here.
Rained last night, not a lot but enough to shutdown the gardening/yardwork we had planned for today. After breakfast it seemed like a good idea to go look for rocks for a couple of hours while things dried out.
Went to a spot where we've found some stuff before and knew that the road would be okay.
Pulled off the gravel road and there are a bunch of shot up Christmas decorations on the ground. Okay, people go out on the BLM land and shoot. Sometimes they leave their trash. When I find it I pick it up. Not much use for folks who haul stuff out in the boonies to shoot it up, then just leave it there, and over the years I've cleaned up a bunch of it.
Stepped out of the truck, bent over and picked a bullet off the ground. Walking around for a few minutes collected just over a pound of bullets. Picked up the shot-up decorations, threw them in the truck, wandered off in search of rocks.
Came back with rocks, (nothing really special, jasper, chert, Cyndi found a nice big chunk of pet wood) dumped them in the truck, backed out onto the road to leave. When we pulled in it was overcast, while we were there the sun had come out and it was a pretty nice day. Well, when I backed out onto the road, the sun was glittering on brass in the road. We got out of the truck and started picking up brass. Apparently these gomers had been shooting on Saturday, set up their targets and stood in the road shooting. Mostly .45ACP with a smattering of .38 special and 7.62x25. Again, what they were doing was legal (except for leaving trash), I don't have a problem with folks going out shooting, and from the looks of their targets they needed the practice.
When we got home I threw the brass in a bowl of water to rinse the mud off of them, well after I'd put the rocks away. Counted the brass in the process, and at today's prices the brass we found paid for the gas to get there and back. Even if you don't use the brass, last time I checked scrap price on brass was almost $3 per pound.
Moral of the story is instead of griping about these folks, take advantage of it. The lead I picked up will get melted down and I'll cast it into more bullets. The .45 and .38 brass I'll use. The 7.62x25 brass I'll hang on to for now and use for tradebait, sell it or whatever.
