A guy stopped by the shop today with some old coins and I picked up 25 Walking Liberty halves with most being in great shape! He also swapped me an 1859 Silver 3 cent piece which is tiny and pretty cool. I paid a bit more than spot for the halves, but less than the going retail, so we were both happy. These are one of my favorite old coins and make fantastic pendants and bracelets, so I was happy to get them in such good shape. I also buy Buffalo nickels, Mercury dimes and Indian head pennies when I can find them at decent prices

That's cool, I'm a collector as well. I used to buy Morgan's and Peace dollars off e bay but quit once they got over $25. Once they hit $50 I sold most of them but still have some. I really like the Indian head pennies, something special about them since all are over 100 years old. Depending on condition the 1859 in good condition is worth $25 according to my book which is the 2011 edition. Sounds like a nice deal for you.

I don't collect except for coins I can use in jewelry. I check every one for key dates and errors even though I'm sure they have been looked at very closely before I get them. Most of my Indian heads are late 1800's and 1906 is the newest I have if memory serves. Last ones I bought were $1 each, but were in pretty good shape. I have found a bunch with a metal detector, but most are pitted pretty bad.

I have used beautiful coins in jewelry, too. I remember when silver was dirt cheap, I sold a lot of coin jewelry. Sounds like you'll be making some, too. My brother in law has a really, really stupid mother in law. When silver was near it's highest, she presented a near full shoebox full of old silver coins to him that her recently deceased father had saved and left to her. She wanted my BIL to do her the favor of buying the coins at face value so she wouldn't have to take them to the bank. He says he grinned ear to ear, then paid her about half of what they were worth. She made out, he made out. This is the same woman who didn't know that you could get your change back from when you pumped your gas. She had been "tipping" for years.

Some folks just have their head in the sand I suppose. A couple of years ago the wife and I were set up at an indoor craft show, when as soon as the doors opened a woman entered, stopped, looked right at me and made a bee line for our booth and asked if I knew anyone there who bought old coins. I told her I bought them on occasion and asked what she was selling. She pulled out an envelope with 13 Mercury dimes, so I asked her what she wanted for them. She said, oh, just face value. I said, Ma'am, I can't do that. These are silver and are worth much more than face value. Silver was somewhere in the $20's and I figured spot was over $2 each, so I gave her $25 and you would have thought she had just won the lottery! The feeling you get from a reaction like that is far better than a "Boy, I got those for nothing!" I just saw a pierced Walking Liberty today with an $89 price tag, so think I will cut a couple and see what happens.

Nice score radio! I had about 30 very old silver coins and a few old copper pennies that I kept in a small wooden box in our bedroom. Long story but when one of our daughters was in her teens she had a (short lived) friend who stole not only my coins but also some gold jewelery! connrock

Just curious about how you are going to cut the silver coins. Is it possible to cut them in two showing the face and back from the same coin? Talk about cutting it thin, that would be cool and very difficult I assume.

Look at the bright side. At least you got to enjoy them and made a few bucks on them . I often hear of folks loosing their collection to thieves and more often than not, they are spent at face value for cigarettes, beer, or meth. When we were foster parents, one of the kids cleaned out my modest collection and I found out later that most wound up in pay phones. Yes, it was a while ago

I had a cousin rob my coin collection, but a store clerk knew they were mine,I just had to ID them to get them back! That was 40 years ago,he was always a POS,but I forgave him, never trusted him again either/yes big difference between the two.... We never did click....So yes I had a few years with it......Thumbs up

Have a coin collection myself. Thought about selling many times but there is some sentimental value that keeps me from doing so. Also own a low end metal detector. Oldest find was a Chinese coin from the early 1800's. I often take rocks from the holes dug while detecting.
