I may soon have a chance to buy a complete setup geared toward a small retail shop. Casting equipment, torch, molds, tumbler, buffer and all the needed hand tools. I know there are many variables for condition, brand, etc, but what might be a reasonable price be for a functional setup without too many frills?

Variables. Does this include a Kiln? Wax injector for the molds? A way to make your own molds? Wax tools? Etc., etc.?.

He had a retail booth at Silver Dollar City at one time and made cast silver pieces for many years. He carved many of his own designs, so had to have had a pretty decent setup

Go to Otto Frei online. They have everything at pretty decent prices. If you can buy good used for about half price you are getting a fair deal. Buying the whole set up should be less than the total of each piece too.

I know he had vacuum casting equipment, all the hand tools, a vibe tumbler and a nice buffer with dust hood. Other than that I have no clue, but doubt it was much more than the bare necessities. My wife has an awesome kiln we could use if he didn't have one.

I only mentioned Otto Frei so you could check new prices to determine used values. I thought that was your original question.

I had never looked at casting equipment from them, but they have lots of stuff, so it is a great source. Since you had mentioned them, I thought others on here might look at their site, so thought I would mention that they were good to deal with. I've bought mostly hand tools from them, but prefer them over Rio G.
