Hey Gang,
I won a listing for a Lortone 45C tumbler that came with 4 old small containers of grit.
I got a prompt email after shipped that one of the containers broke in transit and got what looks like fine labeled grit all over the tumbler unit and box. Below is their message.
'We had a little problem with your shipment (Lortone) Fed-ex returned because one of the lids on the grit broke and was spueing dust, we'll clean it up and print another label and have it on it's way, let me know how much was lost/damage etc and we'll make it right.. Thanks for understanding.' I replied,
'No problem as long as no grit has got into the motor housing. I can take it apart to make sure its clean. thanks for the heads up.'
I received it today and all they did was Ziploc the grits, and throw it back into the same un-cleaned box with the tumbler (un-cleaned) and boxed that box in another box and shipped it again.
Many question is, would the fine grit get into the motor, pulley or any other part that could break the tumbler unit? It has the OEM motor and belt guard.
They did nothing to clean it up as they noted. My reply about opening and taking it apart was to check their clean-up job, not offer to clean it myself.
Should I be concerned about the grit all over and would taking a air compressor to it clean and fix a possible issue.
Thanks for your help.
Matt

It sounds like the problem should be between Fed Ex and your seller. Ifin it was me, I'd be screaming for REPLACEMENT OR REFUND from the seller, including ALL associated shipping expenses. If a sale on Ebay, they have their Buyer Protection program, so that's could be an option. I know how aggravating these tribs are, but never roll over for lousy customer service. Ok, I'm finished ranting. Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice, sadly im not to mechanical but I should be able to clean it up.
I'll take it to work tomorrow, take pics and share the progress/outcome.
I'm emailing them as well. It's definitely not what what was advertised in the photo/description, after it got shipped with all the grit inside.

At the very least, I'd take the motor apart and clean it very good. Especially the bearings and shafts. If any of that fine grit works its way between the bearings and shafts, you'll quickly be replacing the motor.
Also take the roller shafts and bearings apart and clean them very good. Acetone and Q-Tips works good. As for external parts, pulley etc., a good washing with hot water and dish detergent should be all that's needed.

Thank again for all your input. I hardly ever buy on Ebay for this exact reason. The seller listed this item as a working functional unit. Listed Description: "Lots of extras, but we don't have the tumbler. All the extras included, all pretty much full. Motor turns and works fine. Model 45 c with box included. Paper work/order forms included. Feel free to ask questions and thanks for looking." Aside from it not been cleaned at all after the grit broke loose in transit the unit does not work at all. I think it was seized before it was listed. They plugged it in, heard it hum and called it a working unit. I don't believe the unit would be completely seized up in transit. It would have at least turned over a bit before going out. I'm sure they will resolve this by refunding. They have 100% positive feedback. Here is what I wrote requesting a return. I have never returned on Ebay and it seems a hassle but I'm determined. Also pics of the unit before and after as well as a video. Video Link It's too bad too. I got it for a good price and I have 2 4# barrels waiting to get used but no tumbler lol. Response from me: Good evening ABCD, thanks for re-shipping the 45C in a timely manner. Unfortunately I find that the tumbler was not as described in the description details and photos provided during the sale. I appreciate that you bagged up the grit, however the unit is covered inside and out with grit. More importantly when plugged in, the motor hums and is seized up. No other parts turn. Here is a video. . My impression from your message was that you were going to clean it. It looks as you just bagged the grit and boxed it back into the original shipping box which was not cleaned either. I believe the tumbler motor was seized up before it was listed. Did you open the motor housing plate and physically see the units fan, belt and barrel pulley were rotating? Or just plug it in heard the motor hum and considered it running and in working order?
To resolve my dissatisfaction of not receiving a clean and fully functionality item as originally listed: I would like a full refund of my winning bid amount as well as shipping/handling I incurred. Thank you for your time & I look forward to an agreed resolution. MattPictures listed: This is what I received: Thanks again everyone for your input with how I should go about this. Cheers, Matt

The grit could easily have clogged up an open frame motor like that. At any rate soulds like a good ebay seller.
