My daughter's graduation party was today at a place we rented on Lake Huron. We got there about four hours early, so I found some time to get to the beach and pick rocks. I've picked rocks on this beach four or five times this year and found a bunch of Petoskey stones and pudding stones. The one I found today was by far the most interesting though. I have no idea what it was, but I plan to cut it. Any ideas what it is? Dry:  Wet:  Dry:  Wet:  Ok, I cut it. It's not a huge rock and the shape was not great for clamping. I was only able to get an end cut and one slab. I'll glue it to a 2x4 and cut the rest later. I should change the title to "Blue Speckled Rock" because it's much more blue inside. Here it is:

Wow Rob, if it wasn't in Michigan I would maybe guess an ocean/poppy jasper or the like. Hummm???
And give my congratulations to your daughter! Well done. Did she settle on which college? I think she will do really well about anywhere.

She's going to Central. They offered to pay for everything, so it seemed rude to not accept their offer. I'm still hoping she'll go to Michigan for grad school. Go blue!

Wowser, very cool! Pisolitic or oolitic stone probably. Sometimes they are calcite/limestone based and sometimes they are actual silicified jasper or agate. Whatever, I loves the orbs and poppies and it looks like you've got a real uncommon prize there.....Mel

The orbs don't stick out as much as the ones do on your rock,but its close...The ones like this cut the same inside,as the outside looks..   |

Thanks for the pictures, fossilman, I'm going to cut mine today. I'm worried that the green orbs stick out. That probably means the black is softer. Maybe basalt like mibeachrocks guessed.

OK cut it looks a lot like orbicular rhyolite we have here in Texas too. Some of ours also has that blue color. Is yours soft limestone or hard material like jaser or rhyolite?......Mel
