hello all i had my second load in polish. checked it after a week and the shine was not there. so i cleaned it out and used aluminum oxide instead of the cerium and after three days its looking better. don't know whats up with that, but this happened with both batches

Wiz, I'm not experienced enough to even offer suggestions as to what to do or what polish to use. My first batch did not polish at all and I took some of them to the rock show and asked people why. Most of them said because I probably didn't leave them in the pre-polish long enough. Since then, I have kept them in prepolish at least 8 to 10 days. I don't even know what kind of polish I use! I got it at the rock shop and the lady there said it is just a generic polish. All I know is it puts a nice shine on most of my stones. A few haven't polished well and when I get enough of them to fill a barrel, I will put them through prepolish again and try one of the other kinds of polish I have (aluminum oxide and cerium oxide). If that doesn't work, I'll have to try something else or I'll just not worry about them because they aren't my favorite stones anyway!

Curiously enough, my early batches polished beautifully. I had no failures until recently. Still don't know why. Repolishing with the proprietary polish that comes with Raytech vibe kits solved one batch. For the other I went back several steps and it worked fine when I next tried to polish.

Don't forget, it's not always "what" you used. The smallest bit of contamination can cause some terrible results (been there, done that). Small cracks, crevices, or pits can be very difficult to clean of old grit. I have become very picky about letting any type of imperfection into the pre-polish or polish stage. Just a thought. Ron

Now here's something funny. I've always read about removing rocks with crevices or holes and have followed the directions. This time I let a a fair number through with small pits or cracks and a few with fairly big ones. It just seemed as if the whole batch had these imperfections and further grinding would never remove them. Also, some of it was local rock -- I don't know what anything is -- it's stuff that's a bit geode like, you sometimes find twisty layers of crystals or hollows with crystals inside -- and the interior effect makes it interesting. To my somewhat surprise, the whole batch polished up beautifully, including the ones with the holes and stuff.

I had the same problem with my sweetwater agate just about every piece had a deep hole or crevas in it and they turned out very good. The Turtle wax really didn't chnge the shine much, but I am satisfied with the results. Tami

I so missed thinger and sthingys. I think that would be sweet w a t e r. I have a RaytechVibe 5 and the polish that came with the kit. Only thing is, there are no instrutions on how much to use per pound. all the other grits are very specific. Any ideas? (so glad to be back!)

If you look closely there is a "bad" word in the middle of swee-t-w-a-t-er. That's why it censored it. Just like s-poon. See that one? I find it kinda comical.

I'm just guessing here, but , considering Andy is british, and he administrates this web site, and he was the one to say "OK, I'll change that", "Poon' must be a bad word in the UK. Andy, let me know ;D

Cookie, is your Raytech a 6#r? That's what I have. The instructions that I got call for 2 teaspoons of polish and 4 tablespoons of water if the rocks are dry. If the rocks are wet, 2 tablespoons of water. They say you are suppose to clean them and recharge in 24 hrs. but I never do. After 24 hours, I take out a couple of rocks and see how they look. I then usually just add another couple of teaspoons of polish and a bit of water if needed.
I really like the Raytech because it uses so little polish and puts a high shine on my rocks in about two days. I am not using the polish that came with it right now because I have had such good results with the polish I already had. Guess I should try the polish that came with it, just to see what kind of job it does.
