I love the NW Rockhound FB group. I'm trying to open up my work schedule and hoping to make it for the weekend and camp.
Cheers

"Thingamajigg" is used in western New York also. It sounds like the event would be a lot of fun. It is way too far for me to travel. Jon

"Thingamabob" and "doohickey" are also popular terms... But for an event, I think I'd go with affair, celebration, adventure, occasion, experience, happening, assemblage, phenomenon, shindig, etc. But then, that's just me! (I was raised in the Howard Cosell era of excess verbiage, lol ) Sounds like it will be a blast! Like Frankie, it's a little too far for me to go. Jean

I had a homeroom teacher in 10th grade that escaped from Cuba just before Castro took over. She did not understand the "Southern" language at all. We had to educate her. One word that was hard for her to understand was "doohickey" ! She was a trip trying to teach her. She once overheard us use the term "up a creek without a paddle", she immediately responded with her Spanish accent "you can not do it without motor" ! One kid kept giving her the finger and she did not understand, she ask us what the gesture meant. We could not do it ! We sent her to the office, ask first the school secretary - she would not answer running from the office laughing so hard she had tears in her eyes. The principal came out and he answered her question. She went back to her class, and the principal watched until he did it again. He got called out and taken to office. He was given five licks with a paddle, made to come back to class, apologize to Mr Martel, and then the class. His parents had to come get him out of school ! That kid never thought about giving the finger again and did not like anyone talking about it. What dumb things "chillens" do.

This event is shaping up to be intimate with a touch of class (not from me!). If you are on the fence about it, join up and we'll feed you! Big potluck, rock poker, camping, dogs, and talking about rocks all day.
