Anyone have specific directions to the location of the Arizona Black Jade? I found it once many years ago, but my memory isn't what it used to be. Oh... I'll be coming from central NM.
Thanks! Phil

I am in about the same boat as you Phil, I was there about ten years ago and I want to go back, I just don't recall all the turns. I remember is about twenty something miles of dirt road in the Sierra Anchas to get there. Maybe I will do recon trips to find it again.

Thanks. Sadly, neither of those stories are for the stuff in Arizona.

Thanks everyone. Keep those references coming, maybe we'll crack this nut yet! Someday I hope hear from someone who has actually been there, done some collecting, and can give me directions. Basalt, obsidian, even a form of brown basanite I can collect locally (within 100 mile). It's the good black jade that eludes me along with good black basanite with no white specs.
foxtail, have any more specifics? That's the general area I think I found it many years ago.

That is about a half hour of searching through Google's BS.

Phil, I don't know whether this will help or not. I just checked John Sinkankas's third volume of "Gemstones of North America" and he wrote: "At this time (1997) I can find no confirmation of either jadeite or nephrite in Arizona."
He said several samples of AZ "black jade" had been tested and found to be diabase in metapellite, fine-grained actinolite with magnetite and "probably" quartz, a very fine-grained hornblendite and ferrohornblende, an iron-rich member of the amphibole family but not jadeite. He was an amazing researcher but he may have missed the "good stuff."

Thanks. anything is possible. They missed lots of stuff. It could be that the black jade we found is simply an exceptionally high grade of Basanite.

Phil, I didn't know anybody knew about the prospect of black jade in Arizona. Maybe I can help you find "the good stuff" again. Contact me via: blackjade.rocks

The language in everyday discussions has been "gemmy ferro-hornblende". I have some from @azrockgeek. Maybe we should send it to the dude Good Earth uses up in Seattle. I am happy to cut a piece for examination. gilamonster - Your's is different than the absolute black from Greatrough? Tell us more!!

The knowledge I have about ID'ing jades is virtually nil, But my friend LithicBeads knows darn near everything about this stone. Be happy to refer him for an ID.

I am no expert on all the jades/nephrites, but those that I have handled do not have fracture lines like shown in some of the pieces there. It would be interesting to get a piece to Frank/lithicbeads for him to test.

Hey all, thanks for your interest. We'll tell more as the certifications roll in within the next few weeks. Went live with the webpage yesterday and already have a few qualified requests. Hit up the form if you'd like me to send out a few samples for your colleagues to test. They are not all created equal, so the more testing the better.
