Okay everybody, since the owner of Old School Rock Shop (OSRS)is still trying to sell things on this forum, I thought I should give you all a warning. I try to be a kind person and my intention here is not to hurt OSRS, but rather to prevent problems for some of you here.
I once made a purchase from OSRS off eBay. It had some problems. Christopher the owner apologized and gave excuses for poor service (sick mother, etc). He made me many promises and asked me to try him again to prove he was sincere and to let him have a chance to make it up to me. I decided to try him again BUT only with my back covered. I would only pay through PayPal. (He seems to have closed or have been booted of eBay so I insisted on PayPal at the least). Well after Christopher received my money he ceased all communication -- with me or with PayPal. I had to file a claim with Paypal and they eventually refunded my money. (Actually he did accidentally send me a spam notice that he was opening a shop on Etsy and wouldn't I like to check it out and buy something, LOL!!!)
Please be aware of this history when dealing with this guy.

This is a great example of why the 50 post rule exists. Not for folks to blow through 50 posts and then sell us something, but so those of us who participate in this hobby can read between the lines of a new member and know them as a human before knowing them as a cash register.
I'm very sorry to hear that this has happened to you. This guy should be banned for life from all participating clubs/forums.

Don't worry you will not see any more posts from me, I'm sorry you had trouble with me on eBay, I do apologize. Glad they refunded your money atleast, I honestly never did see any money from selling on ebay because they always had 21 day holds on the funds. I did not mean for any of this to happen, I wish I would have known then what I know now, it's a rough world to learn on the job in these days.

I agree with Good Earth. The 50 post rule gives us a chance to know a little about the person. Gives them time to settle in and meet some of us.

Sounds like the only way to do business in this case is on approval. He sends rocks, you pay afterwards IF the material is as promised.

Of course, there is not actually a 50 post RULE. Just something we talk about.

You know..Like Deb193redux said there is no 50 post rule, It is a fine idea, but I got to thinking..Someone could burn 50 posts in a few days and then start hitting up the buy and sell , and then what would you say.."Well they have 50 posts so the must be legit..."..In theory 50 posts sounds great..But in the scope of things ,I really do believe there should be a way to have it where they must post X amount of times in 6 months...That way is shows contribution to the forum ...Not just a quick way to get to sell their wares..When they realize they can't sell so fast they will either leave or if they really want to be a part of the community they would stay ...Just my thought on it...Thanks for listening...JOhn

Of course there's another way of checking them out. Just go to their profile. Click on recent posts, and judge for yourself if they're just posting quick comments to build up their 50 posts. If they're not really adding anything of interest or value to all of us, Just posting quick comments like "nice material" or "sweet cabs" and the such, then be suspicious of them. Be very suspicious.

As interesting as I found many posts on this forum, it took me quite a while to get to 50 posts. If you are a buyer, be a bit wary, same if you are a seller. If someone has 50 close-to-relavent posts than they probably aren't going to try and get my occasional box of rocks from me and then vanish. But if I was to sell a big-ticket item I would be much more wary than my usual trustful self.

i didnt run it, or set it up, but yrs ago i was selling custom cue sticks most were high end...we had an escrow system set up to protect both parties..dont know if that would work here..i think you all are getting close to getting a good system in place..the 50 post is good, maybe time in forum can count some, quality of post, alot of factors to consider if you really look at it..and of course we have plain ole gut feelings about some..anyways just my 2 cents..as a newbie its very hard to post something you all dont know already or havent seen before....

I'm definitely a newbie, but here's my thoughts on this. If they sell on Etsy (as I do) or ebay, there is a pretty good system in place to check them out there. The number of sales, the number of good reviews (feedback) their listed policies etc. Of course not all sellers have a web-site, but the list of long time sellers posted here is along the same lines. :-)

When I joined this forum, nobody mentioned a 50 post rule, which does not exist except in our minds, I would see newer member offer to send the merchandise first, then wait for payment, and it was good.
I saw others ask for the merchandise first and said that it was nothing personal, but I don't know you and your new here, as far as buying and selling (the person had been a member for almost a year, 150+ posts, but had been inactive for most of that time). The seller agreed and business was all good.
So what I am getting at is, if the person is untested and no one in the forum can vouch for the person as a seller, then ask for the merchandise up front, if they are insulted or give excuses, avoid it like the plague! An honest person who wants to be accepted will gladly send it first and await payment.
I wouldn't even bother to mention a 50 post rule.... if others can't vouch for the person, then they need to send it first... if you have never done business with the person and are not 100% on them, ask for the merchandise first. If they say no, then you may have saved yourself a lot of grief, if they say yes, then sit back and wait, if it never arrives it didn't cost you anything!!, if it arrives and is what you want, buy it and let others know about it.
We have a list of people here that are trusted sellers and it probably needs some updating, but it's a good start. also, PM others that you trust and ask if they have done any business with the person. do more than wait of 50 posts, be pro-active and help others as you help yourself.... every once in awhile someone posts about a good sale they made from someone and how great the material is, I see those and mark that persons name down in case they have something I might want in the future. It's not rocket science..... it's rock science.... and a little common sense!!
And Paypal should always be used anytime you buy/sell anything whether it is here, etsy or ebay. Not doing so is asking for a problem.

One jig tying site that I frequent keeps time of how much a user spends online at that site since joining. I was shocked the last time I checked to see that I had spent over 5 weeks on there and it's been awhile since I last checked. Could have used some of that time to fish. Maybe something like that could work here.

Use your gut feeling. Instinct goes a long way. Plenty of great suppliers here. They have earned their reputation. They go out of their way and are repeatable.

Maybe it's time to put some sort of rule on the books. As it is now, a considerate new member may read all of the 'before you post' material, follow the rules set out, and end up with a black eye in the process. IMO that makes the community seem unwelcoming, and a valuable new member could be lost in the process. I realize we all gotta have thick skins on the interwebs, but we should at least match the written rules with the community expectations. As a slow posting newish member I would be fine with that.

If a noob shows up and starts selling and it doesn't feel right then ignore them. If they are offering something totally kickass and have the photos and/or references established elsewhere (ebay etc.) then buy it. Slapping people around about a rule that doesn't exist is stupid.
