Last month I attended the Prineville Rockhound Pow Wow in Prineville, Oregon. At the Pow Wow, there was a good selection of vendors. But it was the field trips that appealed to me most. On Friday the trip was to Richardson Ranch and the Saturday field trip was to Friends Ranch, both for thundereggs. I skipped the Sunday trip for petrified wood and instead ventured up to the Lucky Strike mine to dig for more eggs. I came back with more than a bucket of eggs from each site. Each site is a pay to dig site. All these sites charged $1 per pound of rough. The field trip fee was $10, but that covered all three days of field trips. The Friends Ranch, which is about an hour or so northeast of Madras, has been closed since its owner passed away in 2009. According to the field trip coordinator, this was the first time it has opened since then. The trip was well attended with about 60 people digging for eggs. Even with that many digging it seemed everybody came away with as many eggs as they wanted. Last week I finished cutting the Friends eggs except for a big double and a triple for which I need a bigger saw to cut. The typical egg from this ranch contains a clear, bluish, or black agate, or some combination of those. But there was enough variety and types to keep me interested while cutting them. So here are some photos of some that I cut shown wet. The first four are the typical variety found at the ranch, with centers a mix of clear, bluish, and black agate. Some have a more variety and color in the centers And some quite a bit more to them Even with all the fractures I really like this one This double is kind of cool with the two very different halves And this next one I really like Hope you enjoyed them. Thanks for looking. -Patrick
