So I had a bunch of my sculptures on display at this conservation center for 2 weeks. Drove down there this morning with my 3 yr old while the eldest was in pre - k. It takes 45 min each way to get down there so after picking up my stuff and watching the turtles in the indoor pond with the kid it was time to get back on the road. Kid wasn't thrilled about that and asked to go for a walk. There is a pond with a quick path across the street so I said ok and we headed over to go for a walk. On the way over we walked along the side of the driveway that was freshly paved, it used to be a dirt driveway and in order to level the surface for paving they scraped the surface and piled dirt and stones along the side of the road where we were walking. Of course being the rock lover I am the entire walk my eyes were focused on the piles and not much else. We crossed the street and had a lovely walk along tall grass and blackberries, stopped to watch turtles sun themselves on a rock and made our way back to the start of the loop. On our way back up the driveway to the jeep I (of course) bent down to pick up a rock. This made my son start picking up rocks. By the time we made it back to the jeep my purse was full of rocks (it's a pretty big one as I often double it up as a diaper bag) and we had made an entire loop around the parkinglot (also freshly paved) I picked up a variety of sizes thinking the larger ones I could use as bases for trees making my trip back and forth 3 times a bit more worth it considering I hadn't made any sales and gas ain't cheap. (I did notice quite a few business cards were gone so not a complete loss) We got back in the jeep and drove home where I immediately grabbed the dish soap, toothbrush and garden hose and began cleaning the rocks we acquired, here's my guesses at what we found along with a pic of the area
Unknown
Milky and smoky quartz
Unknown but liked the fracture. The smaller one is concave
Chalcedony
Smokey and tangerine (?)
Mica schist (close up has small garnets)
The creme da la creme
Some type of granite (?) But it Definitely has garnet in it
Close up
And my son didn't do too bad either, lots of little mica schists, granites and a brownstone
Here's what we were picking thru
Thanks for looking made my day to find those garnets. The only garnet mine in Connecticut is now closed to the public
