I went up to Cowichan River on Vancouver Island with my girlfriend and her dogs. It is stupid hot here right now, terrible. I'll wish for the heat again though when we're in the darkness of winter. Location Clay bank eroding. We smeared ourselves in clay and are considering trying to sell some. You know, dress it up as some spiritual magical rare expensive thing, haha. We were wondering if clay ever hides good rocks/fossils? Didn't find anything in the clay ourselves. Throwing rocks for her dog to catch. He loves it. Does not love actually catching them though. We could lead him all the way up the river just throwing rocks ahead of him. And the elk. They are massive! Neither of us had seen elk in person before but I've met a few moose. These elk were amazing. There was a whole herd of them. They stand still in the forest and always keep trees between you and them. A bounding elk is intimidatingly huge. They're as big as my truck. Glad we were in the car at the time. We're going to be back to hunt some eventually. One could probably feed you all year. And a couple rocks we found Here's me, looking for rocks bcrockhound.com/2014/08/02/rocks-and-elk-on-cowichan-river/Thanks for looking and have a good day!

wow, we have elk in herds near here, but I have never seen them. I love the way they sound when they call... so exotic and wild. Totally eerie if you have never heard one before. good finds on the rocks... is that red breccia looking one a jasper of some sort? I love the purple/blue threads running through it. It fairly shouts. Sounds like a wonderful trip. thanks for sharing it with us.( 80 degrees here, too, and humid. just not used to that!)

I just watched a video of them and that sounds eerie and cool indeed. We almost got lost driving out of the woods there, would have been a heck of a night if so. Glad to have dogs on wilderness adventures. I'm a bit of a scaredy cat. I think the red one is red jasper. It is the brightest one we've seen. The red jasper on the beaches and such seems very dull.

think it is mostly a mating call, go back this fall.. you might hear them. They can be heard from a long way away. I want to see what you do with that jasper, its awesome!

Thanks for taking us on your day out, looks like a successful trip. Given their size, it's amazing how easily the elk can move through the woods.

Looks like a paradise bc. I hope you have a big freezer, they say elk meat is fine.
Vancouver Island has to be heaven.
